It ran great when I pulled it...

That line needs to be added to the list:
"The check is in the mail"
"I'll respect you in the morning"
"I won't come in your mouth"

I bought this motor (VW 36hp) a few months ago. The seller claimed it ran great, and that he'd removed it to put in a bigger motor to make commuting easier. The engine was indeed complete, as the ad stated, so after a quick visual inspection, I told him "Be right back" and I grabbed my ground starting kit from the bus.
He asks "What's that?"
"I'm going to start it."
"Huh? You can't do that!"
"Sure I can! All I have to do is hook up the bellhousing, connect the battery, pour a little gas down the carb and we're good to go.

So I hooked it up, and it started on the 3rd try, with a funky, light metallic clack coming from one side. Suddenly this was no longer a $500 engine - I offered him $75 - and he took it - thinking I could use it as a core, but as it turned out, I still lost.

Turns out it sucked a valve, but it had been run so long in that condition that the valve seat had migrated to the case. There was some flotsam and jetsam still in the cylinder, which accounted for the noise. This engine probably would have been savable, but judging by how extensive the damage was, it was run for a while with the valve head beating around in there.

Agree and that is pure BS. Hope you contact him. At least you got a head and other giblets off of it. Assume that the crank is gone?

Sad to see, especially with this jerk lying about its condition. Arent you glad you started it up? Good call!

PS JORIAN, THAT PHOTO ABSOLUTELY TAKES MY BREATH AWAY. WHO IS SHE???

I bought the engine at a steep discount knowing it had a problem. He knew it had a problem, and was embarrassed as hell when I started the engine and called his bluff. I don't think either of us knew the true depth of the issue.

In either case, all of the accessories on the engine (carb, air cleaner, tin, working generator, etc) are worth way more than the $75 I have into it, and I think the cam and crank might be salvageable.

$500 is a lot less than what this local seller is trying to get for the same thing...

http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/pts/266313834.html

Is this really worth $1500?

Hell no that's not worth $1500 - and it's not a complete, running motor, judging by the pix.

How about this one: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=412455

Thats the $hit my DAD used to do before my mom kicked him out LOL LOL LOL

There were plenty of vw motors built in our kitchen. I think it was the smell of gas(dad rebuilding carbs) that drove her nuts!
