Porsche Crest Porsche models...

No, as in Plastic models. Anyone here built any? I used to build models all the time when I was younger, I saw this one sitting in a hobby store, decided to buy it and take my time on it. I need to go buy another now

my GT-1 evo:

Those are some cool cars, I'll have to look into that. I prefer actually building the cars though, that's the fun part.

best way to own all those Porsche cars that you couldn't afford otherwise. I have a collection of about 300 kits at the moment, (not all p-cars of course) and I'm proud to say that they include a 935, 936, 550 speedster, 962 and a few other nice examples. sure I can't sit in them but I can dream

After you have a few Exoto models in your collection, glue just won't get you high!

since I used to build for competitions, it was a little hard blowing up stuff that took tons of hours to build and won several awards. so instead we used to go to model club swap meets, buy up all the already built crap that guys were looking to unload and have a field day on the fourth. the things we would do to those kits. it would rain plastic for hours

Tamiya puts out some of the best detailed plastic models. Their selection of Porsches are fairly limited but if you can find one of the 1/12th Martini 935's snap it up. It's a fabulous kit.

ditto, I have one and am not likely to ever part with it. it needs a decal sheet though. Nitto also used to make a pretty nice 1/24th 935 (curbside) kit for which Esci later picked up the molds when Nitto went under. I also found a few 1/12th Tamiya 910s (kits from the early '70s) that were already built. The reason why I bought them though was that one was mostly unbuilt and the oher had been assembled without paint and using glue that had become brittle over the years enabling the parts to literally fall apart undamaged. the condition of the two is good enough to be able to use both for a full resto into one piece. one day I'll have the time...

Ronin, MRC in New Jersey used to be the distributor of Tamiya kits in the U.S. You used to be able to get replacement parts for their kits at one time. Check the instruction sheet to see if this service is still available.

yep, that was the plan! I've just been procrastinating. the MRC era ended already a few years ago so I might have to get a hold of Tamiya USA. didn't Tamiya plan on re-releasing this one recently though?

Re-releases of many of the Tamiya kits will not have the original decals for example any of the Rothmann cars will have generic designs because of the cigarette ad deal. The price of a re-release will for sure be more than that of a vintage kit. I built the 1/12th 935 when I was a teen and it survived several moves but recently met it's demise and had to be scrapped. I'm look for another kit to build.

I presently have one of the old Pocher kits Alfa Romero Touring car that have the true spoke wheels in which you need to lay each spoke into it's respective hole in the rim. A PITA but the results are stunning. If you have the inclination and patience, these kits are cool!

My Hobby

When I ws a kid I built model airplanes from WW1 and WW2..maybe it was smelling the glue that was so attractive to me....I don't know, nor can I remember?

All those vintage kits that I built are worth a bundle today...some of them going for $200.00.

I sometimes think it would be nice to do it again, but it is a passing thought...I have grown up and moved on to other things...but I have chosen to remain a kid at heart...like restoring cars, collecting firearms and art. I have to admit my interest in restoring cars has waned in recent years..but my interst in Porsches remains simply because it was something from an earlier era in my life that is dear to my heart.

Today Porsches represents a social outlet and these Boards represent a creative outlet where I have been able to hone my writing ability. I have tried various things here...sometimes it's not what I say but how...it's the mechanics of it...so U might say you all are my hobby.

Model Kit building is very similar to car restoration. The full size car is taken apart, subassemblies are catologued and photographed. Like a model kit, the parts are cleaned, sometimes stripped of paint, repainted and then reassembled.
