What glue for book bindings?

I keep my Bentley and other manuals in the garage for easy access. We have very hot/dry summers here and the pages are seperating from the bindings. What kind of glue should I use to repair these?

BlueSkyJaunte 10-14-2003 11:24 AM

You need an air conditioned garage, with space for my vehicles. ;)

Jeff 10-14-2003 01:07 PM

I'll second that! Storage = Driving privledges, right?

Milu 10-14-2003 01:18 PM

Considering what they cost shouldn't Bentley at least be hardback and perhaps spiral bound?

Jeff 10-14-2003 01:20 PM

You would think so, unfortunatly they are not.

BlueSkyJaunte 10-14-2003 01:25 PM

Gotta hide the motorcycle somewhere while the parents are in town.

Jeff 10-14-2003 01:32 PM

OK, but the Martin guitar comes with it!:D

Is that a serious plea? If so we've got a three car garage with a bit of space.

Funny, while Tammy and I never hid our motorcycle riding from her parents, we never told them about her accident! To this day they think her knee surgery was from a slip while playing Frisbee at the park!

BlueSkyJaunte 10-14-2003 06:12 PM

Only semi-serious.

We'll probably just stash it in the barn, which is--regrettably--"infested with scorpions". ;)

Thanks for the offer, though.

Your parent may think they have a "Found a bike in the barn story" on their hands and sell it on ebay to buy some flowers.

Scorpions are pretty small critters to need their own barn, aren't they? We just keep ours in the back yard.

BlueSkyJaunte 10-14-2003 06:28 PM

Nah, all I had to do is say "there're scorpions in there!" and I gah-run-tee they never set foot in the barn. My mother still has nightmares about the red squirrel that followed her into their garage 3 years ago.

And heck, if the scorpion story doesn't scare 'em off, the black widow infestation will keep 'em away. ;)

On topic for CUL8R:

It looks like polyvinyl acetate adhesive (PVA) is the stuff to use.

Wow, this turned out to be a much more interesting topic than I thought it would be.

Thanks for the links Aaron.

I seem to rememeber that Kinko's will spiral-bound anything for you...dunno at what cost, though.

It's probably pretty cheap. I'd just worry about drilling holes through the text.

"Let's see... the minimum clearance should be *DOH*!!!"

cassisrot 10-15-2003 12:56 PM

Off topic again, is that the barn with all the rattle snakes?

BlueSkyJaunte 10-15-2003 02:33 PM

No rattlers in my barn.

Actually, so far I've found only 3 scorpions and 2 black widows in it. But we don't need to let my folks know that. ;)

LeeH 10-15-2003 08:38 PM

Have you tried shining a black light around inside the barn at night? We had a pretty bad scorpion problem when we first moved here. We would find at least one each week inside our house. Right after our daughter was born my wife was laying in bed with the baby and saw one crawling up the sheets.

At that moment I went on the offensive. I bought a black light and every night would inspect the house and the back yard - black light in one hand and rubber mallet in the other killing 3-5 each night in the yard. Things are much better now. We only had three scorps inside this summer with only a dozen or so kills outside.

Ah! The joys of desert living!

BlueSkyJaunte 10-15-2003 09:54 PM

We've found ONE in the house. It was when there was a lot of construction (digging) going on next door. My wife found one under a flower pot on the front porch. I've found two in the barn and my wife found one on the barn siding.

We've got four cats who do a good job at controlling unwanted guests.

The barn is pretty much unoccupied these days (we used it for storing horsefeed in the past but don't have a horse anymore!). When a store a bike or extra vehicle in there (always temporary) it sits in the middle of a 30' x 30' slab o' concrete. One of these days I'm gonna knock the barn down and build a nice air-conditioned garage...
