I've thought of that Kurt. It's not critical, yet, and I'm hoping it won't be. I just exchanged e-mails with Italcarguy, who lives near me, and he concurs. I'll be watching very closely, however. If I think there's even a hint of danger, I'll be loading up and be outta here. The house is insured up the wazoo, so I'll take the irreplaceables and be gone.

singpilot 10-27-2003 11:54 AM

Ok, I am gonna feel really bad if we weren't a little more ready to get out there. I think I am gonna get to VNY airport, there is a van there. I can hang at the office and get stuf done if there is no need. Sonic and Kevin are welcome to meet there, I'll PM my number to both of you. We could always cruise the Gulfstreams (my office) while waiting.

KevinP73 10-27-2003 12:30 PM

Time for an update....anyone have any current news ?

singpilot 10-27-2003 12:31 PM

ok Scott, any progress?

scottb 10-27-2003 12:32 PM

Here's the latest picture...as of 1:30 p.m. Lotsa black smoke, and I can see flames on the hillside.

singpilot 10-27-2003 12:37 PM

I am on the 405 just at the bottom of Sepulveda Pass. Kevis on standby at VNY airport.

italcarguy 10-27-2003 12:40 PM

scott,
i am in gardena right now working. maybe i should leave and go home?

dd74 10-27-2003 12:44 PM

Scott: I'd get the **** out of there, man. If you can see flames, it's time to leave.

KevinP73 10-27-2003 12:48 PM

Hey Scott....Do you know why ducks have flat feet ?

cassisrot 10-27-2003 12:49 PM

Scott I second dd, you need to get your ass out of there!

scottb 10-27-2003 12:51 PM

Anthony: If I were you I'd come home. Not sure you'll need to do anything, but rush-hour is gonna be hell today because all of the westbound 118 traffic for Simi, Ventura, etc. will be on the 101. That'll cause back-ups on other freeways. You'll be kicking yourself if you need to get home and are stuck in traffic. A friend called to tell me it took him 2-1/2 hours this morning to go from Agoura to downtown. I sent you my phone number. Call if you want to talk.

Scott

scottb 10-27-2003 12:52 PM

No, Kevin, why do ducks have flat feet?

italcarguy 10-27-2003 12:52 PM

check this... my ferrari 308 is in the garage on jackstands and i live around the corner from scott (closer to the fire). my wheels are in north hollywood getting re-done. i just called my friend and he is taking the wheels off his 308 and take them to my house should we need to move the car.

scottb 10-27-2003 12:53 PM

Tony: I'm already up here. Is there anything I can do to help?

italcarguy 10-27-2003 12:57 PM

no, the house is locked and nobody is home. i just got off the phone with my friend. he is at the end of sesnon. says the fire is about 3/4 - 1 mile away from the dead end of the street right now. i think i am gonna leave work in a few min. i will probably call you once i get up there.

Rot 911 10-27-2003 12:57 PM

Scott, if you can see flames, what the hell are you still doing there?

singpilot 10-27-2003 12:57 PM

OK, Scott. Am at the hangar. Have a full size van. Traffic is starting to get tough. Can get to desoto on the 118. Is howling east wind here at the airport, and you mknow what the sky looks like up your way. Bad

KevinP73 is standing by. Moment of truth. Should we come?

KevinP73 10-27-2003 12:58 PM

To stamp out burning forest fires...You why elephants have flat feet?
To stamp out burning ducks.
Moral of the story....Look out for the elephants.
(and trying to lighten things up just a bit, Bud)
We're here for you.

singpilot 10-27-2003 01:00 PM

Scott, they just closed the 118. Completely.

KevinP73 10-27-2003 01:03 PM

I'm going to put cars away here and meet Micheal at VNY. Micheal, whats the best way to get to you?

scottb 10-27-2003 01:06 PM

A little levity today is a good thing, Kevin. :D

I just spoke with Singpilot. He's at Van Nuys airport with a van. He's going to hang out for awhile. I told him that if he wanted to come up, I'd order some pizza and we'd wait it out. He said he's going to do some work, and we'll talk more a bit later.

My thanks to all of you for your concern. It's gonna be a long night, me thinks.

Rot 911 10-27-2003 01:06 PM

Damn it get out now! I know I sound like your mother, but as they say, better safe then sorry!

singpilot 10-27-2003 01:08 PM

Kev, I am at Clay Lacy on Valjean, just up from the Airtel. Come on over, we can go from here if needed, the girl at the reception desk knows where I am.

Cornpanzer 10-27-2003 01:10 PM

I spoke to a friend of mine earlier who has a customer in Valley Center. This guy called my friend and said that they seemed to be out of harms way and 30-40 minutes later his house was consumed due to a sudden shift in the wind. Be careful and dont assume that you are out of danger until this is all over. Hope this goes well for you!

scottb 10-27-2003 01:11 PM

Kevin: To get to Lacy, take Sherman Way west, and just before going thru the tunnel at the airport, turn right at the Airtel Hotel (Valjean). It's a block or two up from the Airtel, on Valjean.

MotoSook 10-27-2003 01:19 PM

Wow! I thought I was having a rough day...

Good luck all you guys. Thumbs up for all the Pelicans (and others) helping others out!

scottb 10-27-2003 01:25 PM

Here's the latest...at 2:00 p.m. local time.

The obligatory sun obscured by smoke shot. Hey, this IS Hollywood, after all.

Paul491 10-27-2003 01:44 PM

Hey, sorry to see all the terrible things happening out there... I grew up in Van Nuys and know the area well. I am now in Arizona and feel quite helpless. As the others have said: DON'T WAIT TOO LONG!!!! I don't want to be morbid, but they have found people in their cars that did! So, please don't take any chances, guys. EVERYTHING can be replaced except LIFE. So be careful out there! My humble prayers, as well as many others, are with you and your loved ones in your time of need. God's speed!

PS. Anyone heard if Santa Clarita is ok? My sister lives out there and I haven't been able to contact her...

singpilot 10-27-2003 01:47 PM

Scottell for direc....we're on our way. Can you call Singpilot on his cell to give us directions

Rob McKibbon 10-27-2003 01:47 PM

We just finished a 3 month battle with forest fires here in BC, took almost 500 homes in the Kelowna area where my mechanic is located;
Best be getting everything out (especially Porsches and Ferraris) while the getting out is good.

From looking at your photos, this is serious. Fighting forest fires is really tough, the wind, humidity and temp all play factors; the fighting equipment is more like spitting on a fire at this point.

Our prayers are with you also......

scottb 10-27-2003 01:49 PM

Santa Clarita should be OK. It's east and north of the fire.

Jens 10-27-2003 01:51 PM

Man o man o man! Scary *****. Frightening pictures. I lost everything in a fire years ago. Got away with the clothes on my back and my work van. Do what you have to Scott, I can't not think about you at a time like this. You've got some good friends out there.

Jens

scottb 10-27-2003 01:56 PM

I have some GREAT friends out there. Singpilot (whom I've never met) and KevinP are on their way over now with a van. Unbelievable! I hope we won't need to use the van, but if so it's comforting to know it's there. I'm buying the pizza, and we'll hang out for a few hours.

Hillary Clinton wrote that it takes a village to raise a child. I think Wayne and Tom have started a community on this board, and it's in emergencies like this that the true character of the P-car crowd comes to the fore. You guys humble me.

Paul491 10-27-2003 01:58 PM

Hey thanks for the info. Scott, I hope your right about Santa Clarita... those pictures look seriously nasty. Scarry spooky stuff. If I was still living in the valley, I'd already be there with my truck helping any way I could. Even without pizza! So stay cool, focused and above all... SAFE! Good Luck, my friend, we’re all pullin’ for ya! I’ll be keeping a vigil…

I agree...I've been following your thread since early this morning, and the character of these fellow pelicanites amazes me. You guys all deserve a http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif and a http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/embeer.gif . Scott, is noone else in your community moving out yet?

scottb 10-27-2003 02:08 PM

A break...maybe?

To the northwest, it looks like the fire is laying down. To the west, however, it's still rocking and rolling. Here's the latest picture, shot at 3:00 p.m.

This last picture is a good one for the ole U.S. Postal Service.

carreradpt 10-27-2003 02:36 PM

I used to live down that way and we would watch the fires burning the hillsides from our back yard. But this is real bad. I have lots of friends down there and worry for all of them. Scott I would get the hell out now and not take the chance. You might not get another. I am really impressed by the people on this board and how they step up to the others and help when needed. Take the help and beat it.

scottb 10-27-2003 03:00 PM

Premature optimism

4:00 pm update. Things are not looking good. Fire seems to have found some fresh fuel. Kevin and Michael are standing by. Not leaving just yet, but....
