Glad to see everyone to the south of me is doing okay. I have been watching the news and this thread regularly over the last few days.
good to hear from you Bob as I was concerned after Saturdays drive. I was thinking to myself that you lived right in that area. The other Pelican that hasnt chimed in is Kevin Grizard. He is but a stones throw from the RR Library. He is just finishing up building a new house. Scott, thanks for the updates. It good to see this community goes beyond the keyboard. I hope Sam checks in soon. My families thoughts are with everyone in Socal. |
Its raining lots of ash here. The fires at Stevenson Ranch (Santa Clarita, North of Los Angeles) are about 1 mile from me. The fire dept thinks that the fire may jump the 5 Frwy tonight, and I'm right across of the other side of the 5. I'll keep you posted.

Wow. I've been gone for two days (also because of the fire) and just caught this thread. Yikes.
I too am amazed by the willing support of friends and friends to be on this board. We've just been doused by ashes in the OC - and counting our blessings. The Laguna fire was close to our home and the feeling of helplessnes is terrible. Our hearts are out to the 1,500+ families suddenly without their homes. |
After two pretty long days, I think I'm finally going to get a good night's sleep. The fire is a distant glow on the horizon, and does not appear to be a threat to my neighborhood any longer.

Sleep well, fearless sire, thou hast battled honorably against this mighty dragon's fire. Ye have seen the evil in his eyes and felt the searing heat of his flared nostrils and bravely stood thy ground. Thou and thy friends are as valiant warriors of old, who boldly held the sacred turf of thy realm and did not flee thy castle nor shrink in fear. Well done! May the God of heaven continue to be at your side to further guard thy flanks from future attacks from this hellish firery beast. Rest in peaceful slumber this eve and rise refreshed in the morn. May the winds of good fortune be with you on the ‘morrow and force this wicked and evil fire dragon back upon himself to writhe and die powerless in a smoldering heap.
In all seriousness, I hope the next few days brings an uneventful end to this most tragic of all fires in California. Sleep well and continued good luck for you, your loved ones, friends and neighbors. Our prayers are with you. |
Amazing, Paul! Thanks for the eloquent words.
Here is the latest picture, as of about 6:30 a.m. today. The haze you see is a combination of smoke and, thankfully, fog. A marine layer moved in overnight, bringing down temperatures and increasing the humidity. The fire is still raging to the northeast, northwest, and southeast of here, and unfortunately HughR is still in harm's way to some extent. My community appears to be safe, however, and I'm going back to work today. Unless something drastic happens, this will probably be my last update on this fire. Once again, I want to thank you all for your kind words and support. And, once again, I want to especially thank Kevin and Michael for their selflessness in coming over to the house on Monday with a van, just in case.... The folks on this board are just the best, and I only hope I can one day return the favor, though in happier times and not in a natural disaster. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1067438728.jpg |
At least now I know what caused the fire.

Us over here in Vegas arent dealing with the fires, but boy, do we have all of your smoke comming over here now. WOW, Its bad enough, I can see 3 blocks down the street.
40+ wind to hit Vegas today, bringing all of the smoke over to us now. |
The temporary flight restrictions have finally been lifted, so I took the helicopter out yesterday to look at the Simi Valley/Stevenson Ranch aftermath. What were once green, rolling hills now resemble a moonscape.
