Hmmm. I'm not sure that's fair. I think people need to separate the man (this doesn't just apply to Axl) from his art. A lot of our great writers / artists / musicians / free-thinkers / actors were / are / have been real weird-os / dicks / perverts etc. There never will be a perfect human being that will stand up to absolute scrutiny without lacking somewhere for someone. We just have to accept people for what they bring to enrich those around them. Say what you will about Axl Rose's personality but you cannot deny that his music gave (and still gives) a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. You cannot please all the people all of the time (you all know the words) but so long as you're pleasing some people some of the time then I guess you're doing well. |
Ill admit that I'm not the worlds nicest guy, nor am I always poilte. I do not please everyone that I come in contact with and that doesn't bother me in the slightest. But, I do what I do well enough that the people that I work with ie; Music, art, Construction and design know what they're getting from meand don't mind if I'm cranky from being up all noght or for a couple of days working with some snapperhead in a recording studio that will probablly never even release his/her album because they're just not good enough to crest that hill where you're great even though you're a social wreck.
I'm not as grouchy as I claim to be nor am I as much of an a-hole as I claim to be or as I come off to be. Axl Rose is one of the most distracted people in the music business, he's a mess. His nickname used to be "the Mess" years ago when I was working for Ruffhouse records. We never worked for them but Scott Ian, gave us enough info regarding Axl that I'd never want to be in the same room with the guy because I'd probablly strangle him. I did a session with Nikki Sixx (Frank Ferraro) where he was producing a band (with no name) Nkki was the "producer" and pretty much was a Lamo in the production department and kept asking The guy I work with and myself what we "thought" about this part and that part. We agreed before hand not to help him and were told not to help him pretty much, so, we just said it was all great. Well, it wasn't, but Nikki (frank) was a really cool guy. He's really strange to talk with because when you look at him when you're talking to him, he has the same kind of look in his eye as a Shark, he looks like a shark just about to maul something, so we were calling him Jaws the entire session. He thought we were referring to Ron Jaworski ( a former Eagles Quarteback, whom he thought highly of, so he thought we were complimenting him) it was pretty funny at the time. I got off track again, oh well. Alot of the musicians I worked with are completely out of touch with reality which is not good, they're always being catered to which isn't good either because when their careers evaporate in front of their eyes, they freak out when someone actually expects them to act like a normal person and that's when the problems start, drugs (well, more drugs) O.D'ing..jail, whatever you can think of....it's ridiculous. Everyone whom I've worked with ( well not EVERYONE) has asked for me again when booking sessions, I usually don't accept the invitation because I'd rather not take their money for something that's not worth their time to spend it on. So, I'd just rather not do it... |
I have a great story about Stephen and Damien Marley That I'll share sometime, time.
