By using that formula any number you choose, the resulting formula will be a multiple of 9 (9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72,81) and never have a value greater than 81. If you look at their chart, all of these have the same symbol
99: 99-18 = 81 98: 98-17 = 81 97: 97-16 = 81

If your son likes the concept of "Infinity" (thanks to Buzz Lightyear), consider fractals. Theoretically. the shoreline of England, as an example in a book on the subject, is infinite in length if you continue to take into account the changes(zigzags) in direction at ever more microscopic levels. Sounds like he would enjoy in a general way how PI was derived, ever narrower slices(sectors) of the circle so the central angle approaches zero as the number of sectors approaches infinity.
That should keep him busy for awhile!! And the infinity minus one....Make it a simple "equation" (in quotes because both sides do not equal) Infinity + 1 = Infinity subtract 1 from each side Infinity = Infinity -1 Infinity is actually a concept rather than an actual function since it annot be measured or, for us poor humans, even imagined. I think it is wonderful that we even came up with the two ideas of infinity and zero!!!! Both ends of the mathematical spectrum; the alpha and the omega.....
