Odd LA traffic thing I saw today...

I was heading West on 101 just past the 405 today. In the oncoming lane, heading South (East)... I noticed that traffic was completely bare.

Then, came a CHP Highway patrol car... he was weaving back and forth across all lanes in an "S" shaped. He was going about 50-60 mph. Behind him was all of the traffic... backed up and forced to go behind the squad car who was driving the "S".

Why was the cop doing that to deliberately slow traffic? This was in the heart of the 405-101 basin at about 2PM... didnt make sense, no accidents were in the area.

Anyone know?

no, it is a running roadblock, and it is becuase they are trying to clear something up the road, either an accident or caltrans workers or police activity or...

It isn't a conspiracy, and mass speeding on the 405 at 2pm? Not likely given typical daytime traffic volume...

Agree with Nostatus....I seen that happen loits of times when I was in LA.

We have traffic jams here in LV too....It seems like everyone brakes, slows down to bumper to bumper, but by the time you switch the channel on the FM dial...everybody is up and moving again...in other words for the lesser lites among you, that need it to be spelled out in bold capital letters....our traffic jams last about 5 minutes before it's the open road again...of course that doesn't apply to the 15 headed towards LA...Sundays the poor broke suckers who dropped the house payment at the Roullete wheel or Slot Machines should feel right at home...with bumper to bumper traffic ....

It's called a Rolling Roadblock. They are trying to make a break in the traffic so someone can (usually) retrieve a piece of debris, or a car that is stranded in the median.

I ran into that last year in Orlando. He came up on me, moved in front and turned his lights on. Then he started to weave back and forth a slow down. Finally we came to a stop short of several emergency vehicle. About 5 minutes later a chopper landed in the middle of the highway and two minutes after that a second one. It was quite a sight. 30 minutes later they both left and we were free to go. As I passed the "crash" site you could see a car stuck in a tree upside down, he must have been flying. Not a pretty sight.

Usually they do it so that CalTrans can pick up a couch or something off of the freeway.

I saw a police car bring everyone to a stop like that on 880 in Oakland a few months ago. A quarter mile down more than 30 cars were lined up on the side of the road, all with flat tires on two or more corners. Very strange site!
