gun crime

I legally carry a gun for defense. I also enjoy shooting sports. I no longer live in the UK and handguns were banned a long time after I left. I still follow UK events and I was shocked by the ban and confiscation. It was supposed to end gun crime (who on earth would believe that one?). Now we have these numbers but not even an apology to the legitimate handgunowners who were victimised.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3195908.stm
On a similar note: it seems it will soon be illegal to carry a pocket knife in Denmark. UK police will soon be using portable imaging technology to identify gun and knife carriers (civil liberties?).
The law everywhere (some countries more advanced in this matter than others) is forcing a division into sheep and wolves,
giving us the option of being a victim if we are the good law abiding citizen or a criminal if we seek to be prepared to defend ourselves, heaven forbid the consequences if we actually need to. With current trends I think it may be only a matter of time before my carry permit is revoked.

Come to Minnesota USA. We just passed a new conceal carry law. Law abiding citizens only need to take a class to get a permit to carry a concealed handgun. And despite what the opposition predicted, we haven't had any wild west shoot outs.

If that happens you can always move here to Arizona in the USA. We shoot politicians who try to restrict firearms.

Oh, I don't know about that.

There are plenty of, shall we say, non-US citizens living in AZ who enjoy a nice friendly gunfight or two from time to time. Plus the usual collection of meth-heads, gutter trash, and mental cases who seem to collect in every urban community and wander into the suburbs like a cancer. Somehow, legally or illegally, they manage to get their hands on guns, and the damn PO-lice are too busy--pulling me over for doing 55 in a 45 and running down pedestrians on streets closed to traffic--to actually put a dent in the violent criminal population.

Did that sound harsh? Well, I've been shot at while minding my own business on the I10. I don't have any sympathy for the "faultless downtrodden victims of society" anymore.

Hmm, CSpan had a debate on this very subject on Saturday. They compared the UK to Virginia. Apparently, in Virginia, where carrying is a viable option for citizens, the crime rate is very low. They compared to the increasing gun related crime in the UK.

We can debate on the fact that criminals don't apply for permits of any kind. We need to enforce the already strict laws for gun related crime. And F parole for these scum.

Here in NJ it takes an order from a judge to secure a carrying permit. Not easy at all...even with good connections.

I recall visiting a buddy in Fla. At the time he was into target shooting. Where he lived there were firing ranges on every corner. I flew down with two pistols. The gun shop owner was admiring them when I stated that I was from NJ and that gun laws were infinitely stricter than in Fla. His comment to me, in essence, was that he wished he could turn half the hand gun purchasers away and that he would be in favor of minimal restrictions. Needless to say I almost fell on the floor. I was prepared for him to go into a pro gun rant.

I don't actually own a gun, but I'm glad that criminals know that I might or might not be carrying.

I'm for the right to own a gun, and the tax cuts to pay for ammo.

Whenever I have gone in to renew my concealed pistol permit, there is always a line out the door. Lots of people in T-town legally carrying guns & occasionally criminals get shot.

Wasn't there a county in Georgia that encourages its citizens to carry a weapon. Didn't the crime rate plummet? Nothing discourages robbers more than the possibility of getting capped in the arse.

Are you actually allowed to shoot a crim? Sounds like one of you is going to hospital with a sore arse and the other will be going to prison and getting a sore arse.

When an intruder is shot in your home or place of business, it is not uncommon for a police officer to take a statement at the scene. That's it. End of story. No charges filed, no inquisition at the police station, no frantic calls to an attorney. No bail bondsman. Nothing.

I don't carry guns, but I don't take offense when an old lady living in a rough neighborhoods pops a few rounds into an intruder's torso. It happens at least a half a dozen times in my area, and no one raises Cain. As long as people are held accountable for their actions, I am all for great personal freedom.

You have described the hallmarks of liberty.

That is actually very close to the original anarchist concept. I think most of us would be happy to live in that world. I surely would.

I am not sure but I think Libertarian is a later development. I'm pretty sure both are in agreement on this point

In NJ you have to make sure you use every means to escape or avoid a confrontation with an intruder. If you do shoot someone make sure they're in the house and the bullet isn't in their back. If they drop outside drag them back into the house. It has to be a last resort of SELF DEFENSE. Reality? Not sure. Probably alot of variables here. But that's what a detective told me a few years ago.

I'll stand my ground and protect my interests on my terms, thank you. I'd deal with the aftermath one way or the other.

I disagree...

I defer to Micheal Moore - see "Bowling for Columbine" with an open-mind.

I'm a right winger with a well stocked gun cabinet - but I agree that guns and personal protection just don't work as combined concepts.

Maybe we'd be better off if we could shake loose of some of our paranoia?
