Political-Correctness Patrol on high alert!
From cnn.com - I wonder how much the "sensitivity of Los Angeles County" (see below) is going to cost the economy:
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Los Angeles officials have asked that manufacturers, suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave" on computer equipment, saying such terms are unacceptable and offensive. The request -- which has some suppliers furious and others busy re-labeling components -- came after an unidentified worker spotted a videotape machine carrying devices labeled "master" and "slave" and filed a discrimination complaint with the county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance. In the computer industry, "master" and "slave" are used to refer to primary and secondary hard disk drives. The terms are also used in other industries. "Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services, said in a memo sent to County vendors. Sigh... ![]()

Oh, gimme a break. What's next? "male" and "female" hose fittings? Arnold is on the right track...if there are bureaucrats down there who have nothing better to do than this...

WTF???
What about the "slave" cylinder in our cars? Or, the "Master Cylinder"??? I once had a text book that used examples. Every other paragraph was he, then she, then back to he, then back to she. Drove me nuts! I would have rather had it "she" the whole time. Man, what's next. What about all of the comercials that make middle aged white guys look like complete idiots! You know the ones. ... we can't dance, we can't do laundry and of course we can't cook Oh, and we can't jump either! Hmm....maybe I should sue! Gotta go.. ![]()

I've seen this discussed on another forum.
I can't understand why master and slave are not culturally diverse and sensitive. They are innocuous words, rooted in time long since past. I guess you just have to have the "boss" drive and the "employee" drive.

Given Paul's comment above, I will post the other forum:
http://forums.corner-carvers.com/showthread.php?&threadid=13272 Hehe. Note that master and slave have no specifically racial connotations in New Zealand (for obvious reasons).

Is there not anyone in the entire LA County administration that has enough common sense to blow this off.
Its like requesting that the library not stock any books with 'offensive' words in them. Whats next, coming up with a new name for hard drives to avoid sexual harassment claims. |

Cam? By "down there" I meant L.A., which is roughly 1200 miles South of me. I wasn't thinking of "down under"...okay? Oh, gee..just clicked on the other website. LOVED the guy asking what we should now call a masters degree...

Oh yeah - I figured that Paul.
I was more meaning that because I don't think New Zealand was even invented (1840) when slavery was abolished in the US. Therefore for me, slavery is something that applied equally in Roman times as in more modern times - it basically has no racial connotation.

I've seen the City of Seattle send over payment vouchers (for services rendered on behalf of city) saying boldly across the bottom in verbage that resembles (can't remember exactly)
THE CITY OF SEATTLE AGREES NOT TO DO BUSINESS WITH THOSE WHO DISCRIMINATE. AS A VENDOR WE AGREE NOT TO DISCRIMINATE (signature by whomever claims it) What a crock of worthless, feel-good nonsense. All the tax dollars we pay and this is all they come up with? Makes me want to leave this liberal place. EDIT: Do they really think the general public is really this stupid? this kills me. rjp

How about Major cylinder and Subordinate cylinder....So many good words have been hijacked in the name of Political Correctness. Take a line from an old holiday favorite and see how the meaning has changed:
"Don we now our gay apparel..." Where does it stop? Things are shoved at us from the right and the left and we are supposed to accept all of it without question.... Goverments that attempt to be all things to all people ultimately become nothing to anyone.

Its the stupidity of thinking that one can control peoples behavior through controlling language and the fact that some people think they have a right to not be offended.
Its very Orwellian. I remember reading a saying one time that said the part of living in a free society is being exposed to things that might offend you. A lot of people seem to be forgetting that nowadays. |

Looks like someone's got way, way too much time on their hands....
"Ridicilus" is probably an understatement, but it's the best word I can think of right now, since I'm laughing so hard from reading this......

Some time ago, the LA Times proposed to cut certain words and terms from their copy in light of being PC and offending members of PC-needy readers.
Some of those were: gyped = offensive to Gypsies go dutch = offensive to the Dutch scot-free = offensive to the Scots There's nothing better for a culture than the disappearance/gentrification of its language. ![]()

Where does one draw the line on offensiveness?
I assume the debate would be a little different if we were talking about the term 'jewed' as in 'I really jewed the guy down on the price of the car'. |

First question I would ask those LA officials is if any of them use a MasterCard, have their Master's degree, or sleep in a Master Bedroom. Does the mayor have a Master Key for City hall?
And when are they going to shut down the TicketMaster on Wilshire Blvd.?

Just thought of more L.A. Times faupauxs:
shyster = offends the Irish shylock = offends the Irish mick = i.e. "Mc." offends the Irish
