Ha..Ha..Ha, still alive and kicking

Well we made it through Wilma with only minor damage. No power as of yet. Lost a few big oak trees and some roof tiles. All and all it was a piece of cake.

How did they rest of you Floridains fair?

Didn't even notice it up here in Alachua/Gainesville. Good thing too, since I'm in the middle of having my roof redone - shoulda been finished Friday but the supplies weren't delivered until 4pm.

True story. An acquaintance of mine was supposed to get married in Cancun next month. The resort they booked a year ago got severly damaged by the last hurricane to hit Cancun. They switched resorts....no big deal.

Well...Wilma destroyed the new resort (and all those around)...and destroyed the bride's parent's house when it hit Florida.

They are getting married here in town now.

My parents are in South Miami, near UM. They lost power and some more trees. Their house survived with little to no damage.

My brother was saying that he felt kind of "lucky" that Katrina blew through Miami as it pruned lots of yards. He thinks the damage would have been a lot greater otherwise.

Hopefully you're right. Bad weather on your wedding is good luck for the marriage.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

We did good too. I actually got a lot of video. We got the eye here in Jensen Beach and 10 miles North in Port St. Lucie they were stuck in the eye wall.

This has to be the most bizzare weather event I have ever witnessed. At the beginning of this TROPICAL Hurricane the tempurature was 90° after the eye passed and we got the back half of the storm the temp dropped seadily from 90° to 65° it was downright cold out during the last half of this Hurricane.

I took a lot of vdeo footage of all hell breaking loose during the second half of the storm. I lost a lot of fencing and all my plants have been stripped bare of their leaves. I looks like winter here.

I am without power and it isn't looking good for it to return anytime soon.

I have come to the conclusion that most people are IDIOTS. The day after the storm they are lining up for Water, Ice and food. WTF!! How can you not prepare for this?? We knew for a week it was coning and had an entire weekend to prepare.

My neighbor decided to test out their generator AFTER the storm. Unfortunatly they left their gas in it since last year. They do not speak to me unless they want something. Of course thye are speaking to me now. I started up my generator and turn around the the wife is standing right there wanting me to fix their generator. Its so gunked up it will need to be tore down and cleaned out. I let her hook up to my 5000 watt generator to run their fridge, unfortunatly last night they obviously were getting bold and trying to run more and started bogging down my generator. I had to run around and unplug stuff to ease up on it.

This morning I told her to go get it fixed that the Engine repair shop was open yesterday and to get it fixed today. She says its too heavy for her husband and her to lift it. They are younger than my parents and my dad is throwing around his generator like its nothing by himself.

I ended up going to her house picking it up and dropping it off to the repair shop. I have to go pick it up after work and pay for it. I wonder if she will reimburse me?

We are looking at 5-10 dyas without power here. Possibly longer. Most of South Florida is without power. I really needed to get her house off of my 6 year old generator.

Next year? A 25KW Diesel backup generator for the house. Obviously this is a yearly event in Florida.

BTW - I have a 15KW Propane Gernerator here at my office and the power came back this morning when we returned to work. Go figure! I knew I should have put the Propane Generator at my House. Seriously, my plan this winter is to buy a nice portable 15-25KW Deisel generator for my house.

Vash - My neighbor annoys me because she is a victim, always. She is on disability supposidly, I have yet to see why she is diabled other than her sheer detest for manual labor. You should have seen her and her Ex-husband (She divorced him last year when she realized after 30 years of marraige shes into chicks) hauling their hurricane panels into the garahe after the storm. Both of them looked like they were going to die.

When I first moved in next door 8 years ago I thought they were in their late 60's to early 70's and they were actually in their early 50's!!! My wife and I freaked out! They look and act older tham my parents and my Dad is 60.

What really cheesed me off was last year after the 1st hurricane. I had my generator then. They were grilling london broils and steaks every night. Then they would brong the hot leftovers over my house and ask to store it in my freezer, never offering us any of it. This is their personality to a T! Very selfish people who want everyone to do everything for them. They have no pride at all. It annoys me that I have to bail them out of the mess they made for themselves. Especially since after this week they will not speak to me for a year until they need something again.

You're a dumb saint!

When she came to pick up her food in the morning, you should have said that you "accidently" ate during your midnight snack.

I agree with Jim. What's up with all the people demanding water and food? Did they prepare? Obviously not! My parents are just now worrying about having enough fuel for their small generator. They might have to siphon gas out of one the cars they FILLED UP before the storm. Gasoline quantities aren't issues, it's "How do you get it out of the tanks without electricity?" I think the state might want to consider either requiring gas stations to have generators or subsidizing them.

I don't know if you noticed this from hurricane Katrina, but 99% of people are unable to help themselves, prepare, or not steal everything in sight. But 99% of people are able to blame others for their faults.

Lesson to be learned by this..........people would rather spend 6 days *****ing than 60 mins preparing for a massive destructive predicted weather event.

Update - I called neighbor up and told her to go pay for and get her generator.

When she got home I unloaded it from her truck and rolled it out back.

She went to get her extension cord and the power came on.......

I am now loading my generator up and take it to an employees home 1st thing in the morning. We are on a 7pm to 7 am curfew here so I could not run it to him this evening.

He did, however take up my offer to go to the office and use the shower and get a warm shower for the first time in 2 days.

24 hours after the storm and the lines for gas, water and ice are amazing. It is truly a marvel how so many people do not plan ahead for these storms. How many ice blocks could you make in your freezer if you knew a week ahead of time about a storm coming?

I am rambling but, here is a perfect example of an idoit.

From CNN.com
Quote:
Thousands of frustrated North Miami residents stood in line for nearly 12 hours Tuesday for a bag of ice and three bottles of water.

"All that time. This is all we get?" asked 23-year-old Fanie Aristil, speaking to The Associated Press after waiting nine hours for the supplies.

The sotrm pulled away at 4:00 Monday, these people were then in line for 12 hours on Tuesday?? WTF? How can you NEED ice and water the VERY NEXT DAY? You do not keep enough water in your house to survive for 12 hours?

Then run to a newspaper and give your name out for the whole county to see your stupid.

Pathetic.
