It's always longer and harder than they say...
EARTHQUAKE: my biggest fear as a native Angelino.
Man: that was like 30 seconds, though reports are like 10 seconds. My house felt like a rowboat... Aftershock to Northridge from what early reports say... |
I felt it too... BIG aftershock..
|
Okay. 6.5 on the Richter scale. Epicenter - Hearst Castle.
Hope the castle is okay. It's amazing! :( |
I was driving. Missed it completely.
(To those of you outside of Earthquake country, driving during a mild quake feels like you're going over bumps.) |
Or like a tire is out of balance. In Jack's 911, freeway expansion joints feel like a 6.5 every 2 seconds. No way that you would notice an earthquake in that car unless you were stopped at a light. ;)
FWIW, didn't feel a thing here, ~5 miles west of downtown L.A. and 5 stories up. |
The one that dropped the upper bridge a few years ago made my sister feel like all four of her tires went flat at the same time.
|
Northridge "dropped" the valley about $100,000 per house in SFV. The scared moved out and the opportunistic moved in. Such is law of the jungle, I guess...
|
...and you guys make fun of US for living in the cold..
...hope everyone's okay. |
I moved to the Bay area in late Oct '89. Does that date ring a bell? I just missed that puppy! During the next 3 years I expierienced a few "rides". The one that really got my attention was in San Diego in '92. I was onboard the USS Waddell DDG-24 and we were in DRY DOCK  at the 32nd Street base. We always joked about what it would be like to have that happen and the possibility of the ship toppling over. Well, it didn't fall over, but whoa nelly, the ship was a-rockin'! I don't recall the magnitude but I remember thinking it felt like a LOT more. The fact the ship was sitting on 4'x4'x6' blocks had something to do with that, I s'pose.
Hope the damage and injuries were light. |
Oct '89: I was watching The World Series. The TV went completely blank, and all that could be heard was a mono Al Michaels saying, "We've just had a major earthquake!"
Then the picture came back, and it was Jose Canseco (sp?) looking around the stadium, as were the other players. Freaky... Then a huge landscape of the city was shown. Fires here and there - man. And those stories of the Embarcadero Fwy collapsing! Ugh! |
