Beef Recall

In some areas, beef is being recalled because of the threat of Mad Cow disease, which causes wasting away of the brain, leading to dementia, loss of coordination, and death.

So why aren't they recalling beer?

mmmm. . .beer & beef.

Seriously, the hysteria is a joke. Every day, hundreds of peole get in their car, drive, and are killed. . . .sometimes due to consumption of beer.

Hmmm, I wonder if the cops will start pulling people over for DUIMCD (Driving Under Influence of Mad Cow Disease) . . dementia and loss of coordination, and all.

Not so sure. Accumulated effects of pesticides are not good. Green onions in the salsa can kill you. Look at the life expectancy charts comparing vegetarians and meat eaters. Some real surprises there.

"But Lisa, if we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?"

Don't forget the Beef parts that they put into Pork and Chicken feed. Also those Prions are not heat sensative and if they are spread on food crops as a fertalizer guess what you'll wind up being a Mad Cow. So whats left fish....Mercury poisoning....Facts of life are that to support such a large population on earth food production has to make compromises with safety...after all your not suposed to live forever. They figure 50 years of productivity 7 years of retirement and your warranty has expired and off you go to make room for someone else to fill your shoes. Oh someone just try and tell me it ain't so?

If one realizes the enormous influence the corporate world wields over certain government officials via their paid lobbyists, you should be very suspicious of the spin they have/will place on this potential health issue.

For example, I didn't realize they just changed the policy of dragging sick and infirmed cows to slaughter. As part of the MCD prevention program they now separate them from meat meant for human consumption. So, the day before yesterday, we consumed hamburger (albeit a small percentage) made from almost dead cows. Now, we're "safer". Yeah, okay.

The beef industry is also balking at testing each cow for MCD. opting for other statistical means to determine their health. The Japanese, for example, test each cow meant for consumption. Experts estimate about $.13/lb. to test (hope I got that right), something the beef industry doesn't want to do to gain public confidence; instead opting for other assurances that our moo meat is koscher.

And sausage/hot dogs cannot contain brain or brain stem matter, but everything else in the cow is still okay. That's no surprise, just a reminder.

In the scheme of things, straight cuts of meat are going to be safer than hamburger or any processed meat product. The key word is "safer". For red meat eaters, I hope this means "safe", with or without added hormones.

Moses,
Am interested in any net links you have about consuming green stuff and unhealthy side effects.

Tabs,
I don't think the 130+ people who succumbed to MCD reached their desired longevity limit. What would Oscar Meyer say if he were (ever) alive?

Bon appetit,
Sherwood

It's fascinating stuff. The early reports of the salutary effects of vegetarianism failed to compare similar populations. In this country, vegetarians tend to be better educated, more affluent, exercise more, rarely smoke, drink less and in general have an overall healthier lifestyle. In the few studies that have used population balanced controls, death rates of meat eaters and vegetarians are quite similar.

The last review article I read suggested that a vegetarian diet may possibly add 1 year or so to your life expectancy. The way I look at it, what the heck? It's the last year anyway. What's for dinner? ;)
