Sure, there are some 3rd generation families here that were originally from a foreign nation, but that would run out the majority of the minorities. It would run out the majority of all of us. (In as much as there is a negative population growth amoungst Cuacasian move-ins vs. move-outs, I'd venture that enough of the original white transplants that stayed here long enough to establish a generation or two have left. Or the descendents have left. This leaves only a preponderance of whites who are not natives.)

my 3rd generation comment was tongue-in-cheek. The midwest comment was somewhat less-so. While I haven't spent that much time in the midwest, I've spent some time in Madison and Kansas City (along with various places in Texas...not really midwest). In my experience the level of ethnic diversity is MUCH less than LA...but that isn't saying much, as LA is truly the melting pot of the US.

i grew up in el paso, tx. i once got in a very real argument about where the best mexican food comes from with a kid from east LA. still no clear winner. cant find a good plate of huevo rancheros up in the bay area.

actually I'm just really frickin' pissy right now. My front license plate was lost in the accident (an original California blue plate). I've been running without a front plate, and while parked on the street at a meter (that I had fed plenty of quarters) some meter maid PRICK couldn't ticket me for expired meter, so instead they gave me a $25 ticket for no front plate. Not a fix-it either (which is what you get if a real cop gives you one), but a fine. Like I haven't spent enough damn money fixing the car.

And of course the CHP officer who is supposed to include me on the original accident report so I can get insurance on the case won't call me back, and I know they're going to give me a hard time about it being my fault. grrrrrr......

I used to go to a good burrito place in the inner Sunset but I can't remember the name. It was different than an LA burrito though, which is also different than a San Diego burrito (the small shack variety).

Tex-mex is a totally different style. I don't care for it...SD/LA mex all the way. King Taco is hard to beat, especially for a 25 store "mini chain".

it must be what you grew up with. Tex mex just didn't do it for me. I did however appreciate the shrimp poorboys at ClearLake TX.

Oh, and worst place? I didn't like Dallas at all. Houston in August is damn miserable, and during my multiple trips driving between San Diego and Flagstaff, I despised Phoenix (the freeways didn't connect...this was mid-late 80's).

That's a restaurant right? We have one here in Kansas City, MO. Eat there atleast once a month.

Dam Nostatus you missed the icon of E LA Mex food....Manuel El Tepaych...on Evergreen....Boy could I go for a couple of his Special Burritos about now! Manuel sometimes will pull out a bottle of Viejo Vergal and pour a glass for some of his customers...I especially loved the Machaca...over the years I found out how to duplicate it. Taquitos stuffed with shredded beef covered with a mountain of Guacamole.... I wana goooo hoooome!!!!

I have yet to find a good Mexican Resturant here in LV....there is a good Maricoso resatruant on Las Vegas Blvd...that a tourist wouldn't be caught in...but thats not what I am looking for. I do frequent the Mexican Markets for produce...soooo much cheaper.

Anyway I order Polish Kiebasa from Kowolski's in Detroit..their Holiday Sausage is the best, I order Texas Smoked Sausage from the Gonzales Meat Market in Texas. I buy Blueberry Vinegar from Canteberry Farms in Washington. I buy Green Chili Salsa from El Pinto in New Mexico. All shipped 2nd day air.

Now there is a little meat market out near Santa Cruz, CA that makes various kinds of Smoked Sausage, Jerky and Alder Smoked Salmon....DOES ANYBOODY KNOW THE NAME OF THAT MARKET SO I CAN ORDER SOME????

Mmm, Sausage. My favorite is one of the Many Spanish (not Mexican) Chorizos. My mom used to use it in her famous Paella. Now that's good food!

this area would be my vote for the worst living area, except the before mentioned mexican food, and the damn fun entertaining outdoor stuff. get a 71 bronco, a bunch of dirt bikes, firearms (hunting only), and a bunch of easily impressed women (AC in a car is usually good enough. JK). good fun.

Best mexican food? IMO that would have to be a restaurant called La Mesa, south west side of las Cruces, New Mexico.

Coming from my military travels, anywhere that is not within the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! That being said, some of my alltime worst places I have personally lived:

1. Montgomery, Alabama (Whatever you heard about this place, which is usually not good, BELIEVE IT). Most racially divided and prejudiced place I have ever been.
2. Jacksonville, North Carolina. (Camp Lejune) God aweful town. The beaches nearby hardly make up for the depressive state of the place. If anyone wants to see how little we pay our military people, go there. YUCK.
3. Albany, New York. 8 months outside, 4 months inside. Burrrrrrr.
4. West Covina, California. First weekend there, three older hispanic kids jack my ride, while I was paying for my gas. This was followed up with a burglary of my place 6 months later and two rear end accidents where neither party was insured. Other parts of SoCal are great, this place IS NOT.

Hmmmm, where did you get Po-boys in Clear Lake? I never managed to get past the Shrimp Hut, Maribells and the Clear Lake Inn (before it burned down). Of course the regular trip to Gaidos was manatory also. I was also saddened at the closing of the Burrito King. And why wouldn't you spend your Sundays at Rick's Turtle Club (Are you a Turtle :)?)

OTOH, living in a steam bath with mosquitoes and roaches was the pits.
