Are we GEEZERS?
I saw this article in Car and Driver.
I got me thinking, as a teenager in the '60s, sports cars and to some extent muscle cars got me worked up. I can see how the current teens can get worked up over "Rice" (i.e. Hondas etc.) My question, what did teens "lust after" between the muscle car and "Rice" eras?

Well, I was in high school from '86-'89. The hot cars at my school then were Mustang 5.0s. I think the import stuff really got going in the 90s.
I didn't actually have a car until I was 24, but I swore I'd have a cool Mustang one day. Things change. ![]()

Slammed trucks and Vans with velvet interiors?
I dunno. I owned a Grand Torino (Starskey and Hutch) and a Pontiac Sunbird in the 80's...

no extasy, the drug. That would be the part between muscle and rice. No cars then, just X. I got out of the scene before that hit though...

I can understand why everyone has blocked out the turbo Dodges that seemed to be around in the early 80s. I remember writing a letter to Automobile Magazine saying "Shelby's Dodges remind me of a number of otherwise forgettable women, painted up and taught the tricks of the trade. Try one and you might have the ride of your life, but I can't imaging a long-term relationship with any of them" Ah well, my 15 seconds of fame.

![]() I was in H.S. 78-82. Our interest was 60-early 70's muscle cars. We scraped our money together to get them running and keep them going. My group of friends was mostly Mopar(Dodge ,Plymouth) fanatics. I had a fiat Spyder convertible too, figured that would get me the babes! ![]() From the mid eighties on, I guess the car craze wore off with kids, there just wasnt anything out there, plus I think it got to the point where kids didnt want to get thier hands or designer clothes dirty! ![]() Then along came the ricers! ![]() ![]()

I seem to recall (like Billy and others) the water cooled VWs being pretty hot. Bell, Turbonetics, Callaway, Nuespeed and other tuner parts suppliers fed the following. BMW and Porsche to an extent but not played with quite as much....Oh and the 2.2 Dodges...these guys were like the early Mustang 5.0 guys.
IMO, the end of the muscle car era happened with the mid seventies GTO.

I just came up with my theory-for-the-day: That time, the 80s. Either the lack of any interesting cars or the interest in dull cars of that era lowered the bar and helped create our current owners of SUVs.

I graduated HS in '95, back then the import thing was just getting rolling. We all wanted a V8 camaro or V8 Mustang, but parents got in the way so you would settle for a lowered civic.
I think kids try to get there hands on the fastest car their parents and them agree on, usually an import.

Yeah. Old. At thirty, you would've been disposed of in "Logan's Run."
