How to get a pcar loose (under control)?
There is this turn I encounter on my way to work. It's a right turn, side street, good visibility of on-coming traffic, and four lanes wide. I tried to fish tail around the turn today and didn't get the car to do it.
What's the best way to make a turn and induce a controled 'fish-tail/slide" ? Ebrake? (rally driver style) Lift off gas in apex, get back on it? (porsche newbie style) I've fish tailed and spun out a handful of times, but never intentionally, it just happened and I reacted. NOTE: The things I think about when I'm bored... |
The best way I found with my old SC was to take a turn just a little too fast and kind of throw the car around the turn. It's best to try this in a parking lot before doing it on the street.
Also, make sure the tires and pavement are warm when you try to do it. I used to do it all the time in the summer, but when I tried it in December, I found myself facing the wrong direction. |
So I assume you let off the gas while throwing/jerking it around?

I suggest attending a local autocross: you'll be surprised how soon the rear end will break loose there. Plus it's in a controlled environment and 100% LEGAL! :D

once at a college mini baja event, i had my brand new chevy ZR-2 S-10 4x4. i was blasting down this dirt road to get something. our school hosted the race so we built the course. Ivan Stewart was our guest speaker and race MC. he saw me and told me to let him drive, mothereffer! he called it "steering with the door", anyways i was petrified the entire time. there was this controlled slide where he used the brakes to get the back out and then the throttle to keep it there. i still cant do it in my truck on dirt, nevermind my 911. one of my best memories. hahah

I've found left turns are easier, you can carry more speed & have more room if you loop it. I do this all the time in my Mustang, it's not nearly as easy in my 911 with new tires. Fresh rain is the best for sliding around, espiecally in a stadium parking lot.

Go into the corner a little hot and deep and yank the wheel hard. You'll swap ends everytime. Left turns are better.

Dirt roads will help, make sure the trees aren't too close, and the roads won't kill your suspension. My house is set back from the road about a half mile down a winding dirt road and it's a great playground for learning to regain control from a spin. (I've got a jump too!)
