Wink Would you buy a Rover made in India? ;)

Venerable Tata Conglomerate Creates
A New Rover From the Ground Up
By JOANNA SLATER and JAY SOLOMON
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

BOMBAY -- A row of shiny compact cars in cherry red and pale gray recently rolled off an assembly line near Bombay. Made from scratch in India, the cars were bound for Britain, where they would be sold under the Rover brand name.

Ten years ago, nobody would have believed this was possible. Indian cars, like many other Indian manufactured products, were so low quality that they could barely satisfy local consumers, let alone buyers abroad.

Anyone remember the Yugo? Remember the first Daewoos in the US in the mid-1980s?

We asked ourselves that question recently......for real.

The answer no.

It wasn't worth the money.

Can I interest you in a new Royal Enfield instead?

peteremsley,

Don't want to stomp on your choice of machines, but....

Read some reviews from Bike or another Brit cycle mag. Bike has a "Really Useful Section" where they rate bikes on a 5-star basis. The Clubman 500-s, 500 Trials, and 500 Army each got one star and the coveted "R.U.S. AVOID!" black flag.

Some choice commentary on the Clubman:

Quote:
We say Real retro cafe 'racer' with little go, little stop and big vibes. Pricey for what it is.
Also see Stop laughing and buy a (better) real classic.

I agree, they've got that great classic cafe look. I think I'd rather have a Duc though.

My first bike was a '78 CB750K. Never shoulda sold it--it was in great condition. I bought my current one but it's shaping up to be a money pit. I don't have the time or the inclination to really get it up and running....

Oh yeah, I lust for a '74 Goose 750 Sport...but that's as likely to happen as me winning the Powerball...
