Weed, Booze, Cigarettes, McDonalds ?
 

I don't smoke pot (anymore), I seldomly drink (and actually get a buzz) and I no longer smoke cigarettes (I do love the little basturds). I do not condemn the use of pot, booze or cigarettes, to each his own, on his own property. I occasionally "sneak" to the McDonalds for some of those DElicious frys and the best damn fountain Coke on the planet.

I can get thrown in jail for smoking a doob yet I can smoke as many cigarettes as I want, a pack at a time if I choose. Cigarettes are at least as addictive as herb IMO if not more so. I am no doctor but I would think cigarettes are worse for you than pot because you typically don't smoke a pack of 20 doobs per day, yes there are exceptions....

I can legally drink myself to the point I am no longer conscious, day after day if I choose. I don't believe you can smoke pot to the point of unconsciousness, yet by trying to I am breaking the law.

I can eat Big Macs ten at a time until I drop from clogged plumbing and that's fine with the local authorities.

My point is that we are allowed to make so many choices in this fine country of ours, many of which will certainly kill some of us, so why is pot illegal? Does the gobment make or spend more money keeping pot illegal? Is it because unlike booze it didn't arrive in clay bottles on the first ships that landed here?

you sure you quit? and pot can put you into a coma,,, ever had pot brownies?

It's possible, just for the record. I've seen it happen.

To address your point about the legal issue, have you considered just how much income is available to the government through property seizure? Also, the prison industry isn't crying about having tons of people in the clink, either.

With a title like Weed, Booze, Cigarettes, McDonalds, I thought this would be a thread about some of my favorite things...

My 4 food groups are: caffeine, protein, nicotine and alcohol. Getting all of them into balance takes quite a bit of practice, but once achieved, is fairly easily maintained.

But, to (attempt to) answer the question, there is an interesting theory that comes up every time this topic is broached, and it goes something like this: Hemp is a phenomenal resource -- it is a more efficient producer of paper per acre than trees, more efficient rope producer per acre than just about any other natural fiber [[Rope!" you're saying, "who gives a ***** about rope?" -- bear with me] and can be used for a myriad of other purposes (including clothing and shoes) at very cost advantageous margins compared to other materials used for such purposes.

Well now, you're a huge paper industry in the early 20th century, w/ a very strong lobby (in the days where large corporate interests ruled the world!!!) and you've got buddies in the war material industries (rope! it's the early 20th century, pre-nylon, and uniforms and boots are still canvas and leather, etc.) and you pool your heads and resources and decide it'd be for everyone's benefit to squash hemp like a bug.

So you launch what looks today like a very amateurish propaganda campaign (Reefer Madness! anyone?) about the evils of marijuana and its ability to dissolve society like a nail in a Coca-Cola. Doesn't take much to get it going, given the new media available to spread the word -- and you liken its use to foul stereotypes -- gypsies, negroes, pederasts, you get the picture.

Once this got rolling it didn't stop; only "potheads" were going to defend hemp -- b/c people turned a deaf ear to the hemp industry's protests. And we have today what "everybody knows" to be a bad thing - they don't know *why* they know it, and can seldom put forth a defense that isn't totally grenaded by "what about booze" or "what about cigarettes", but DAMMIT, they just KNOW pot is (sheepvoice)baaaaaad (\sheepvoice).

If you believe this theory and think this was a doozy, you should research how DDT and its manufacturers and proponents got completely screwed by junk science and a "book" (for which fabrication is too generous a term) that scared and incensed the American cattle ... er, I mean public. But the title of the thread didn't mention DDT so I'll leave that one alone.

I have read this theory, and I can add there are many applications to hemp that have been taken by petroleum derivatives. See here I am getting ? The american economy is an oil based economy, not only to run cars, but to make plastics like nylon and polyethylene. Big business does not like people to use a natural ressource that they can grow in their garden. Dupont conspired at demonizing hemp to free the market for its Nylon.

i have never in my life heard a good, reasonable argument that is based on any fact as to why marijuana should be illegal.
my biggest complaint with bush is that although he claims to be a conservative he is continuing the trend of mandatory safety.

I think I made myself clear... The prison industry lobbies Washington to keep MJ illegal. They get paid, and for perfect prisoners, normal folks that aren't violent and get the munchies. The percentage of marijuana offenders in federal prison averages about 13% of the total. For state prison it's probably higher, but I don't feel like doing the research right now.

It seems to me that many people hold the belief that government should be logical. Perhaps it should be...but it's not. Now, there are those here who wish to make life even less logical by supporting politicians who push for more government, more bureaucracy, and more taxes....It's sad that pot is illegal. But to argue for legalization by pointing out that booze & tobacco & fattening foods are even more harmful will only result in booze, tobacco, and fattening foods being made illegal. That's how the neonazis of the left think these days...a huge government, "protecting" us all from ourselves...

how did a good old fashion pot, booze and junk food thread turn into a political thread? seems that every thread here makes that turn before it dies.

Making anything illegal just drives the price up and promotes leakage in our economy. I say make everything legal, tax the **** out of it and just let darwin do what he does best, weed out the worthless losers in society (that are going to become a burden anyway). And for the record, I do smoke pot on occasion. In High School I was a total stoner, but now that I'm out in the real world with a job and higher education commitments it demands a bit more responsibility.
