John Kerry cocktail party facts...
He speaks French, learned in a Swiss boarding school. His wife was born in Mozambique. If he becomes president, she will be the second foreign-born First Lady in U.S. history.
Louisa Catherine Johnson was the first foreign-born First Lady; her husband was John Quincy Adams.

I just thought Speeder was imitating Van Gogh by cutting his ear off, but actually it was a mistake when he was cutting his own hair...

The following was published in today's OREGONIAN...a column written by their "token conservative":
Johnny, we hardly know ye. John Kerry has all but locked up the Democratic nomination, but he's still a mystery. Oh, we know he has primary-season momentum, which explains his 16-for-18 run of wins. We also know Democrats think the Massachusetts senator is their best shot to beat President Bush. But there's so much more to learn because he's apparently such a complex figure. There are, it seems, many Kerrys. I'm not referring to the complexities of a trust-fund lord of Beacon Hill and beneficiary of special-interest cash now posing as populist foe of privilege and special interests. Or the complexities of an authentic military hero coming home and repeating the most ghastly and unproven charges -- charges of beheadings, rapes, maiming and torture -- against his fellow U.S. soldiers. I'm referring to Kerry's then-and-now stands on the issues. Some of his inconsistencies -- hypocrisies, if you like -- display the slick arts of the old pol, the shadings, weasel words, tortured rationales. Some are just blatant and grand. Here's a sample, but beware of whiplash. Kerry's vote for the Iraq war resolution: March 19, 2003 -- "I think Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction are a threat, and that's why I voted to hold him accountable and to make certain that we disarm him." Feb. 16, 2004 -- "What we did was vote with one voice of the United States Congress for a process." The Patriot Act: Oct. 25, 2001 -- "I am pleased at the compromise we have reached on the antiterrorism legislation, as a whole, which includes the sunset provision on the wiretapping and electronic surveillance component." Dec. 2, 2003 -- "We are a nation of laws and liberties, not of a knock in the night. So it is time to end the era of John Ashcroft. That starts with replacing the Patriot Act with a new law that protects our people and our liberties at the same time." Military action against Saddam: Nov. 9, 1997 -- "We must recognize that there is no indication that Saddam Hussein has any intention of relenting. So we have an obligation of enormous consequence, an obligation to guarantee that Saddam Hussein cannot ignore the United Nations. He cannot be permitted to go unobserved and unimpeded toward his horrific objective of amassing a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction." Jan. 26, 2004 -- "We were misled not only in the intelligence but misled in the way that the president took us to war. The president cut off that process [U.N. inspections]. He chose the date to start this war." Constitutional ban on gay marriage: July 12, 2002 -- "We believe it would be a grave error for Massachusetts to enshrine in our Constitution a provision which would have such a negative effect on so many of our fellow residents." (Kerry and other members of state congressional delegation as Legislature considered constitutional amendment limiting marriage to "only the union of one man and one woman.") Feb. 6, 2004 -- "I'll have to see what language there is." North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta): Oct. 6, 1993 -- "[T]he fact is, many jobs are going south now, unimpeded and unregulated by the environmental and labor law controls that Nafta would impose for the first time between our two countries." Aug. 5, 2003 -- "If it were before me today, I would vote against it, because it doesn't have environmental or labor standards protections in it." On whether Vietnam-era military service or lack thereof should be used as a campaign issue: Feb. 27, 1992 -- "I am saddened by the fact that Vietnam has yet again been inserted into the campaign, and that it has been inserted in what I feel to be the worst possible way." (Defending Bill Clinton) Feb. 2, 2004 -- "I don't know yet. I haven't made up my mind." Not making up his mind -- or remaking it up year by year, day by day -- seems to be a habit of John Kerry's. Waffling. It's a political tradition. If he picks Dean as a running mate, maybe he'll bring along the Vermont syrup for the waffles.

My prediction is Kerry-Edwards. They'll give Bush a big ol' run for the money. Exciting!
