GM Tells Dealers to Stop Selling Aveo
51 minutes ago Add Business - AP to My Yahoo!

By JOHN PORRETTO, AP Auto Writer

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. has notified Chevrolet dealers to stop selling the recently launched Aveo, the automaker's new Korean-made entry-level car, a spokesman said Thursday.

GM spokesman Jim Schell, who handles recall and product-safety communications, confirmed the company had issued a "stop delivery" notice to dealers, but he couldn't elaborate on the notification.

"Obviously, the dealers are honoring that," Schell told The Associated Press. "Any more information would be partial."

GM, the world's largest automaker, has had three recalls this month involving more than 2.5 million vehicles.

The Aveo has been on sale in North America for only a few months. GM reported 1,559 Aveo sales in the United States in January.

With a starting price of $10,000, Aveo is designed to give GM a player in a highly competitive segment that includes the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Toyota Echo. Auto executives and analysts say low-priced offerings are important because they often are a consumer's first experience with an automaker.

The Aveo, available as a four-door or five-door sedan, is built overseas by a venture called GM Daewoo Automotive & Technology Co.

GM had said it expected to sell between 50,000 and 70,000 Aveos annually, which would place it near the top of the segment with the Accent and Rio.

Is it just me, or have car names gone way south in recent years? Who in their right mind would drive a Kia Sephia? Say it three times fast, then just try to be halfway manly about it, you'll find it's nearly impossible. Toyota Echo isn't really any better. Now Aveo? How stupid is that? I mean, remember the good ol' days? You could say you drove a <gruff voice> Mustang </gruff voice> or a <gruff> 'Cuda </gruff>. Now today's young men have to settle for <gruff> Kia Rio </gruff>. Aargh ...

Unfortunately, the head-to-head crash-test rating was done with the 7200lb. Excursion at 80mph on a two lane road. For neurotic soccer moms: that's over 3 tons of material to haul the 70lb. kid.

I'll be glad when manufacturers start labeling their vehicles sensibly:
example BH05C
B-Buick
H-Hyundai association
05-The year it actually started selling(not the "'05" models built in 11/03 and released to dealers 01/04).
C-the low cost version. "A" being the lightweight sport model.

Good post, thanks for the heads up. This might mean "replacement parts NLA or $$$). Too bad.

7200lbs? That's incredible. I mean, that's like ... almost 3 of my car, which is more than adequate to move a 70lb soccer player around. Incredible.

remember daewoo tried the us market and failed.......maybe they're trying to duck back into the us market under gm cover..............

It's not just you, I've had this discussion with many of my car buddies. Camry? WTF is that? It's not even a word! There are a few good names left out there though... Chrysler Sebring (like the racetrack), Toyota Matrix (lame car, cool movie), Ford Mustang/Thunderbird (classics), Chevrolet Impala (lame car, cool history), etc.

Think of any others?

Remember the Mitsubishi Starion? I read in a car mag that it was supposed to be "Stallion" but the Japanese would pronounce it Starion. So it stuck. Heh heh.

Names are easy to mispronounce. They have their own connotations, and stir emotions, either positive or negative, all by themselves. Let the cars make their own statements.

Unfortunately our cars have a number that's now associated with a particularly nasty memory. But I would rather not go there.

Ok ready for this:
HP 499, Torque 913 ft/lb
Vehicle weight: 7720 lbs
1/4 mile: 14.39 @ 93.02 mpg

Next up -
03 Chevy Duramax
