What does "Late Model" mean????

When watching TV, they refer to cars as "late model" I always assumed that meant recent, maybe like "latest model." But usually the cars are old and not the latest model. So I thrust my question among the vast experience contained herein and ask you guys.

Thanks!

I always thought it was relatively new car...as new enough to get a loan for (6-7 years in some cases???).

For the older cars maybe it means youngest for that generation. I've usually seen newer cars though when this term was used.

Depends on whether you are buying or selling, all of these terms are relative. ;)

And everyone has relatives.

I thought it meant the car was produced towards the end of the production run for that year or was the newer version of a car model.

Example: I bought a late model Ford Explorer so it does not have the early Firestone tires on it.

OK, then I really don't fee dumb for asking. ;)
Then again I've asked other stuff I should really feel dumb for!!

Just in terms of cars in general. I was wondering if there was a true definition. On the news the other night the had an piece saying that they were looking for guys in a "late model" Nissan Altima. The photo they used was a 1995 model.
