Slightly OT - 917 Painting
 

I've always admired Bob Freemans ability to draw something highly technical and accurate but without it getting stiff and lifeless - so I've tried to do the same with this side view. I'd be interested to hear any comments/suggestions - particularly if you think I've obscured too much - or not enough - or if you'd buy one even.

I might try a 911 next.

I'd say you have some talent. I would lean towards showing more stuff under the skin. Makes me want to go watch LeMans again.

that is awesome... i don't think it needs any more interior stuff... that's what the technical "cutaways" are for. This one has this soul feel to it.

I'd love to own a 911 of this type. Maybe an early one? Targa Florio or Monte Carlo type. 911R? ST? Really nice stuff. Keep going.

Glad you like it - I'll definately try to do a nice early 911 - perhaps the crazy Martini one. The good thing about having done it in the computer is that I won't have to redraw everything if I want to change body details. I might even be able to do peoples personal cars.

Very cool!! I'd love to have one, but I don't have the disposable income. I prefer the less transparent, but either way it's very cool. Are you doing this the old fashioned way or with computers. I'd guess you are using layers which is how you can change the body transparency. Modern tools are really great giving creative people more ways to express themselves.

I love it. Is it possible to make one with a silouette of the driver for scale? the one thing that amazed me the first time I saw a 917 up close was just how small it actually is.

Thanks everyone for the very encouraging feedback. I used photoshop to 'paint' it. I've been using it for a while now and can get quite painterly effects with it using a graphics tablet. The great advantage however is that I can work in layers - chassis seperate from bodywork and so on. I have much more control over how much of the insides I reveal - also I can vary the liveries and bodystyles without having to repaint everything from scratch.

I've been looking into getting Giclee prints done - they're very high quality on lovely textured paper and supposed to last for 100 years without fading. The original is big enough for a good A3 print - I'll probably do a numbered and signed run - limited to 500.

The going rate for this type of thing in the UK seems to be £50 - unfortunately with the exchange rate at the moment this equates to $92 - would you find this too high?

I think there's still a bit more detail and tidying to go into it first though. I should probably chose a particular car and number too - at the moment it's not a car from any particular race. Any ideas for which one to do? I suppose it should be one of the Daytona winning cars from '70 or '71. I'll post some more variations later.
