moderators?

Is it me? Or is this turning into a general purpose chat room. Of 35 thread on my screen I see 9 that are clearly off topic and a few that can only charitable be considered on topic.

This is getting truely ridiculous, IMHO

mjshira 02-27-2004 11:26 AM

Welcome back Bill, hope all is well. I agree with you. Should we have a "social" area - where I can post my Manhattan drink invitations? ;-)

Wayne should start selling Starbucks and other trends products on the site.

Leland Pate 02-27-2004 11:34 AM

I guess I fit that bill. For the longest time I think I've considered this more of a general chat/ask your questions board than a strict tech page.

I do see your point though.

I know I usually don't frequent the other pages that much.
Here recently, I have noticed the drop in engine related questions. Then I realized there is now an engine forum.

Bill Verburg 02-27-2004 11:42 AM

There are likely as many pertinent threads as previously, it's just that they get pushed out and diluted by all the static which belongs in OT.

If I want to rear that stuff I go to OT, It doesnt belong here

Including this thread

Moses 02-27-2004 11:51 AM

Actually the OT forum is pretty interesting. I look at both forums. I checked the Cayenne forum once. It was so lonely. ;)

Bill Verburg 02-27-2004 11:55 AM

I agree, OT is great, Why is it HERE!

dickster 02-27-2004 11:55 AM

Bill,

no i agree, and had noticed the same. alot of OT stays around awhile.

we used to see a gratuitous mention of a "911" just to keep it "on topic" but even that seems to have gone by the way....

theres one with nearly *edit* four pages of posts at the top of the list as i write........

Scooter 02-27-2004 12:01 PM

This forum must be difficult to maintain. Maybe we should self regulate as much as possible. I say, if the post is OT, then we don't participate and let the post fade away into history. Maybe the first person to come across an OT post can post immediately that we should not particiate in the thread and request it be sent to OT? I know I don't have a problem trying to help the moderators out where I can.

I suspect that although we are all aware of the OT forum, It is impossible for some to resist the temptation of a larger audience. If the moderators relocated the OT posts more faithfully, it would serve both forums well.

Series900 02-27-2004 12:13 PM

moderators do it in moderation

Rot 911 02-27-2004 12:14 PM

Shouldn't this post be OT?

No, this is ABOUT the 911BBS, so I think every now and then a respected contributor like BV can bring this up.

There is OT and then there is OT. On the real OT forum there is nothing that even remotely has anything to do with 911s and most nothing to do with cars at all.

Whenever this subject comes up, invaribly someone points out that this is a community. This is where we are notified about a member's illness or misfortune. This is where people get to present thier accomplishments including their P-car workshop. This is where we hear about folks trips or Jack's adventures at the track and in the canyons. This is what it is. I like it the way it is. When it doesn't work, Wayne will change it.

I also like to hear from Bill Verburg. Bill, you are our brake maestro, don't get too sensitive and disappear!

Speaking of Wayne, he recently posted the rules for 911parts4sale. Up 'till then, it was sorta self policed. Maybe if he sees the need, we will again see some rules here.

Bill Verburg 02-27-2004 01:17 PM

Thanks for the kind words and actions

No get this one out of here.

Jack Olsen 02-27-2004 01:20 PM

I just moved a bunch of threads. There's a balance that's got to be maintained between the 'community' aspect of this board and the 'technical' aspect.

It needs to be primarily self-policed, of course, since the moderators aren't on the board all day (personal OT rant: I just pumped 30 inches of water out of my basement, and lost the hard drive on my laptop last night).

It's an imperfect system, but it's still a pretty great BBS.

dickster 02-27-2004 01:26 PM

i've got a screamin 5 month old here at 9pm on a friday night....

but comin back and seeing all those red strips made me laugh - thanks jack :D

great job btw, and sorry about your basement. have a beer, i am.;)

Bill Verburg 02-27-2004 01:30 PM

Thanks Jack, Sorry about the basement, but it could have been several feet of snow instead.

I understand, but I think a reminder to offenders rarely hurts.

I was very pleased at the recent chages in the classifieds as well, there were certainly enough abusers there also.

Hey Milt,

I am going to take this, not as it sounds, but hopefully what it I believe it to be...that is, not anger towards me.

If you look at Bill's post directly before mine and then read my response, you will find just a bit of humor there. :D

Zeke 02-27-2004 02:09 PM

No anger, Scott. I saw your smiley. I didn't see a wink, though, so I thought you were serious in a most friendly way.

No matter, Jack jerked it over here anyway. but I was dead serious about my feelings. If it goes purely tech, like the engine building forum, then we all loose. Whatever, I've said this before and I'll say exactly the same thing again. People will go whereever it suits them. There is no hard rule to stay at Pelican. When and if Pelican is a PITA, then the talk will resume elsewhere.

I applaud the efforts of the moderators to keep the ridiculously OT posts off the board. I think Bill might have had a hidden agenda in his comments. Might have been directed at some particular people who have given over to chit chat.

Vintage911Racer 02-27-2004 02:10 PM

Now I see why me thread got moved.

Squeeky wheel gets the grease eeh??

D Hanson 02-27-2004 02:31 PM

How about some moderation moderators. Jeez, way too many threads moved.

Z-man 02-27-2004 02:34 PM

Hehehe...

This thread has been moved to my domain! WELCOME to the OT Dungeon! Come on in, the water's fine!! Pay no attention to the masked man with the shackles behind you. . .

The sould of this thread now belongs to me... Muhahahaha!!

Yeah, it's Friday, and it's been a long week. What's a dungeon keeper to do? :)

Jack,

If BBII is in fear of being washed away or flooded, I will extend an open invitation to keeping it at my place! :D

Vintage911Racer 02-27-2004 03:32 PM

Jack, Is that why your car is at Daves.

You can keep it at my house 2. I have a nice carpeted garage for my race car. Your would fit nicely next to it. I am only about 1 mile from Dave.

aseem 02-27-2004 03:45 PM

I agree Zeke. Its the community feeling that impressed me the most when I first joined this board. I AM impressed by the technical knowledge gathered here, represented by some participants in particular, but the fact that (most) people care about each other is what is BEST about this board. People that has never met before offering to help out in various ways. We had one such example when one board member sadly deceased, and lots of members offered to help. Lets not OT all this away.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for the offer, but it's at Dave's to get some beefed up rear axles. On the way back from the Andial open house I started to get a clicking from a troubled CV joint. They axles were the originals from the 72, it appeared. They'd done their duty and deserved to retire.

My OT update:

New sump pump from Sears took care of the water. Didn't lose too much stuff.

Laptop is on its way to South Carolina to see what can be saved.

With regard to moving the threads, I probably moved more than I should have. Chalk it up to the stress of dealing with the hot water heater about to float away. :(

vash 02-27-2004 04:50 PM

was it just storm water? no sewage right?

Bill Verburg 02-27-2004 07:00 PM

FWIW, You did good!:)

Hmmm..... so it's going to the "Bible Belt" to be 'saved" eh? I hope it's not too preachy when it it gets back. :) (Bet your new homepage will be the 700 Club website. )
