Rubik's Cube
I found my old Rubik's cube. Are these things really possible? I think it's all lies and anyone who says they've done it either removed the stickers or dismantled it!;)
Anyone out there completed one of these things? |
Whooo! how cool!
Yes it is posible. Remember, when new they came all lined up, so someone had to mess it up. I was never quick but could get them fixed... Pat |
i found the easiest way was to take it apart..........guess it's the "mechanical" part of me :D
remember those chinese kids who could solve them in like 15 seconds? |
I don't even know where to start??? get 1 side done is too hard never mind all of them.
|
I did it a couple times, but was to stoned to remember how.
|
I saw some videos on the net of people solving them in 10 seconds or less. They developed a "technique" for switching them really fast.
|
My personal best at solving the Rubic's cube was 1 minute, 27 seconds.
There are several ways of solving the cube: all are pattern based. If you know the right combination of patterns, it's easy. Of course, I've forgotten one key pattern, so I can't solve it anymore! :( Need to visit my friends in Hungary for a refresher course! :) -Z-man. |
Too much trouble. If you did it once, that was enough. People who did them over and over and could do them in seconds were just short of being autistic. :D :D :D
|
I think the autistic thing is about right, as this never-seen-before deleted scene from Rainman shows.

I found a book on Rubik's patterns. It took it all apart mathematically, explained why everything worked, then showed sequences of moves that would perform operations on the cube. If you think about it like it is, as a series of inter-related matrices, it's really a lot simpler. Even so, to do it right (ie not memorized patterns) and solve it mathematically took me like 6 weeks.

Rubik's Cube - like all mathematical problems, it intrigued me to the point of a near mental breakdown, and alas, I gave up.
I took solace in myself for at least knowing the principles of a haiku. |
dd74, you mean like this?
A Bad Haiku: Rubik's mad puzzle Mathematics at their best My sanity leaves. |
I lost mine...or destroyed it out of frustration, cannot remember. Is there any place they can still be found ? I wonder if I would be better now...

my boss can do it in 30 seconds or less. He was a demonstrator for the company back when he was an early teen. Said he was making $25 an hour. He keeps one in his office for when he is bored or stressed.

I moved a few faces on that virtual one and I couldn't even get it back....poor shame http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/shake.gif

I love these kind of things; been getting puzzles for years and always solve them. Sears sells all kinds of different types and kids always buy me one or two when they're in there.
I solved the cube many times when I was 19 or 20, probably stoned too; no just kidding, but I get a kick out of Paul. The bong in the cup holder was hilarious! But as for Aurel.......... well thanks for nothing! Now I'm going to have to solve that internet rubics cube and that's gonna waste alot of time? Can't seem to put these things down until I've solved it. I'm an engineer by trade; Honors in Math, Yadda, yadda yadda. I'm also one of those gifted engineers that has the ability to use the right side of their brain as well though, so alls not lost. First one to solve Aurel's Internet Cube post here! Game on........ |
Mine became something like those rubber squeezy balls - a subconscious distraction. I'd just find myself turning the cube absent mindedly while reading or thinking about something else. I don't think the virtual cube would serve the same purpose.
I only ever solved Rubik's cube once, and I didn't know how I did it. I was the typing monkey that came up with Atlas Shrugged, I guess. JP |

Actually, I just got a Rubik's cube and used the search to see if anyone here knows how to solve it. I can't. I thought the unanswered challenge from nearly 3 years ago was amusing. Not that I'm any help. |
I used to be able to do it, don't know if I would remeber the pattern of moves now.
|
I used to know the patterns, but have forgotten them. I just put “How to solve Rubik’s cube” into a search engine. The answers are out there, if you want them. E.g. http://jeays.net/rubiks.htm
|
My 15 year old takes 1min 20 seconds to get it done.

Some people understand recursion better than others. Maybe this definition will help:
Recursion If you still don't get it, See: "Recursion". |

once you get the hang of it, they're simple to solve ... SmileWavy Andy |
I can do them in 10 seconds blindfolded.
Then I wake up. |
Wow, 3 years ago...time goes so fast.

Guys,
Step 1: Choose a top color. Keep the center-cubelet that matches this color on top at all times. Top Layer: Step 2: Solve the top-layer edges. Step 3: Solve the top-layer corners. Middle Layer: Step 4: Solve the middle-layer edges. Bottom Layer: Step 5: Orient the bottom-layer edges. Step 6: Position the bottom-layer edges. Step 7: Position the bottom-layer corners. Step 8: Orient the bottom-layer layer corners. Step 9: Done |

I saw a 6 axis articulated robot with vision solve one at the Assembly Tech trade show. The rep gave you the cube and allowed you to mix it up. He took it and put it in the robots end-effector, the robot scanned it and on a screen it told you how many moves it would take to solve it. Flawless everytime! In the same booth they had two robotic hands playing a Chopin piece on a keyboard. The company was Panasonic and that was 10 years ago!

30 years ago, my ex brother in law had one and managed to get one side done...took him forever. I remember he claimed he couldn't imagine anyone doing the whole thing. He left for work. I noodled around with it for about half an hour then just peeled the stickers off and "completed" two sides. I tossed it on his bed and left.
A couple of days later he wanted me to show him how I'd done it and I said I didn't know, he'd just have to keep fiddling with it. Of course I had screwed it up forever and it was now impossible to EVER make it work. At the time I felt regret but never told him. 20 years later he contributed to my screwing at the hands of his sister, my soon to be ex and I felt a LOT better for hosing him on the Rubik's cube! |
Broke mine taking it apart.
 |
