Don't go out on the 'Ring just yet...

Cayenne recalled already....

Sounds like this thing really could "burn up the track."

That's just a marketing ploy. . . to get customers to pony-up $'s for the optional smoke detectors and halon system.

Somehow, I think most of the +10 year old 911's on this board (mine included) would burst into flames long before a Cayenne .....

A great many cars have chafing wiring problems. Heck, the engineers at Honda knew about the chafing in the wiring leading to the hatchback when they built it, and just didn't have any better ideas. At least the boys at Porsche have the sand to admit they could have made it better.

//Lawyer's Note: the above post, while it defends the recall, does not necessarily defend the Cayenne, heretofore referred to as "the pepperwagen." The above post does not imply or connote, and should not be read to imply or connote, that the poster intends to purchase a pepperwagen or further support Porsche in their endeavors to leave the race track.//

<i>"Lawyer's Note: ....... "</i>

Thanks for the clarification ...... :D

BTW: here's a photo of the wiring. In the interest of not self-combusting as I drove down the highway, I took a look. The only wire near the parking brake is this one wrapped heavily in black fabric tape. It is actually under the carpet (pulled back for photo). So I suppose it is possible one could jam the parking brake all the way to the floor several thousand times, eventually wear thru the carpet, wear thru the protective tape, and then wear thru the wire insulation ....... can never be too safe.

Do a search - this is old news. Not sure why some of the media is just picking up on it.

nostatic 03-01-2004 03:31 PM

wouldn't talcum powder fix this? Or perhaps some Gold Bond? Why all the big fuss? Or does all that chafing give you that "not so fresh feeling"? Oh wait, that's another commercial...

Imagine if our 911's had been designed in the current products liability climate:

2.7 Five-Blade Fan, Thermal Reactors, Pulled Head Studs = class action
MFI squirters on 70-71 cars = Recall
Rusty heat exchangers could lead to CO poisoning = Water-cooling
Rear-mounted engine leading to oversteer = End of 911 production!

John, Actually, the 911 was built during litigous times, (hence the demise of the Corvair and the first U.S. 930), maybe things are worse now but there is really nothing new under the sun.

Huh? I thought this thread was about "The Lord of The Ring."

Oh, well: never mind. :D
