Olympic Peninsula Drive Pics (gratuitous)

Drove to Pt. Ludlow this afternoon, found a nice spot with a view of water and mountains just as the sun was going down. Couldn't hope for a better afternoon, really. For a guy who's an amateur photographer, owning a Porsche and living in the PNW is like a dream come true. Here's a couple of my favorites from today. Enjoy:

Nice Dan, I used to have a relative that lived there & we would go visit about once a month. Very scenic, there is also a couple of very nice golf courses in the area. Love the pic of the rubber lip.

The rubber lip picture just came together, somehow. These things happen when I set up the tripod... I was actually studying the rear quarter, which is about my favorite aspect of these cars, and I looked close at the spoiler, and the curves just clicked. It reminds me of art class long long ago: "Rather than taking a picture of a rose, perform a study of a curve of the rose..."

Paul -- you're still pretty close to the Oly Pen, aren't you? Seems like Tacoma's only an hour south of here. Aren't there some nice drives on The Mountain? Come on, you post some pics next!

Moses, I've seen your car and the places you drive -- very nice.

Richard, what exactly do you mean "avie," not sure I'm familiar with that term...

Dan - its the pic that appears below your username... a clown in my case. You can access it in your control panel settings. I believe you need to make your pic a square 60x60 pixels or something like that.

CJ -- The name Shadowfax actually comes from old english meaning "dark hair." Because of that, and despite the contrary description that Tolkein gives, I always associated a mental picture of a dark horse for Shadowfax. When I got the Porsche, despite the fact that the movies were out picturing a white horse, as Tolkein described, I went with the old english name, carrying mental pictures of a horse that was faster than fast.

Motion -- I understand, good call. I always thought it was an avatar, my bad. Hadn't thought of that at all, but I guess it would be a good time to add a "face" to my name.

Ronin -- still lookin' forward to 'em. Do you process all your own? 35mm, or larger? You need to get a film scanner so you don't have to make prints to scan them.

yes, 35mm

and I need to get lots of money before even thinking of buying anything photo related. only problem with a film scanner is that I don't have the control over what the image will look like the way I would with enlarging. sure, you could say "then Photoshop it" but where would the fun be in that?

Well, I understand that. Nothing quite so much fun as tweaking it in the darkroom, trying to guess at what it'll look like while you're peering at the back of the paper in the developer tray ... Eventually you'll produce a satisfactory print that does something totally different than what you originally intended, but hey, "It's art!" right?

Dan,
After spending much time on the OP, I sure envy you guys at this time of the year. You've got blooms and rhubarb, and we've got snow on the ground and ice on the lakes.
My brother lives in Pt. Hadlock, just up the Sound from Pt. Ludlow.
I've stayed on Marrowstone Island many times, at friends houses.

Mike -- it is enviable. I was pretty pleased when the Navy agreed to give me a couple of years in the northwest. Your brother lives in Pt. Hadlock, you say? I was just up in Pt. Ludlow -- I live in Silverdale, just the other side of the Hood Canal Bridge! I'll be sure to post more pics of "blooms and rhubard" (and my Porsche, of course) as they become available so that poor blokes like you still living in the cold can vicariously enjoy some spring weather.

Hey Ronin -- are you about done with those prints yet? :>

I know how that goes. You spend all afternoon in the darkroom, and you walk out with (if you're lucky) one decent print. If you're not lucky, you just walk out with a mild headache, squinty eyes, and brownish tinted fingernails. The anticipation is really building, though -- this much time, there had better be some real doozies, there, Ronin.
