Building a Rifle

This weekend I headed on down to the Shot Show at the Convention center here in LV. Total candy store for gun lovers.
I went expressly to see some of the manufactureres of custom Tactical Rifles. I looked at H&S Precision Shootings new FBI Tactical rifle for $4500. It comes with a complete kit of accessories from carrying case to torque wrench. It's 308 in caliber and features the new Leupold 10X Tactical scope. Very nice.

Those FBI & SWAT rifles are pretty cool.

I once downloaded a video of the USMC SASSR demonstration.

They were using a Barrett Light .50 and blowing nice holes in things like manhole covers, tractor cleats, armoured glass (which caught fire) and a bank vault. It was pretty cool.

I found it on www.biggerhammer.net Don't know if it's still there.

Somebody please explain why people love guns to me. I grew up in Montana and hunted until age 18. Now, I just don't get it. Even hunting with a rifle seems ridculous to me. Bow and arrow I can understand.

Collecting guns and not even shooting them? What's that all about?

I do believe that guns don't kill people, people do. I live an hour south of LA, have traveled around the world, and have never, ever in my 41 years had a situation where I needed a gun.

They represent nothing but violence and the worst of humanity to me. Taken a step further, they represent the death-making that makes war such a repulsive display of force.

ya know, i cant explain gun loving either. but i love them. i have just a few i use for hunting. and to tell you the truth, either i am a schitty hunter, or have the worst luck, i typically come back empty handed. i go just to donate money for the enviornment (in the form of hunting fees) and to hike my A$$ off with my healthy S.W.A.T. brother, with legs and lungs of steel. i dont understand the collection of automatics, but i bet there are some that dont understand why i dump alot of money into a 30yearoldcar. or why anyonew would like to rip around a racetrack on a 250cc two stroke wearing a onepiece leather outfit. haha,( i know why i dont, i am too slow) and tabs, H&S? you mean H&K? i guess to each their own.

Richard,

The videos hosted at www.biggerhammer.net are the very embodiment of your last comments above. Mostly, a bunch of wierd guys getting together and immolating some scenery with insanely powerful weapons. I guess it's human nature to get a thrill out of pointing at something, pulling the trigger and seeing instant results.

We don't have CCW permits here in Australia and most of our guns are outlawed, because we once had a lunatic kill 35 people in a shooting rampage (I believe it's still the worst recorded) and as a result, it's now very difficult to own a gun. I used to be a sporting shooter (I was a member of a pistol club), but it's so hard now, the effort expended to own or operate a gun outweighs the enjoyment of using one. I gave up years ago.

Guns have only been around a couple hundred years... versus tens of thousands of years for humans, so I'm not sure if "human nature" explains it. Prior to guns, it was all about whacking animals with sticks and swords, for the purpose of eating them (survival).

but guns have taken the intimacy out of hurting/killing another. i probably dont know what i am talking about, but i am positive it takes alot more "whatever" to walk up to someone and stab them. or maybe human nature changed.

I've established a pretty liberal image on this board - but I've got a safe full 'o guns myself. Mainly guns, no handguns - the odd rifle or six. Belgian Brownings, LC Smiths, 308 Norma mags - light kinda stuff.

Used to do a lot of upland hunting but have gotten away from it since my Brittany went to doggy heaven. No fun in bird hunting without a good partner and a great dog.

There is something compelling and attractive about guns in almost the same way as cars. I don't generally get caught up in the negative images they represent like Motion observes, but I do not adhere to the "guns don't kill people..." school of thought.

Think about this sorta general info Motion:

Canada has like 1% of the gun related murder rate of the US - yet we have around the same number of guns per capita as the US. Of course hand guns vs. long guns is probably a huge variable.

Thumbs up

Hey Tabs,

Try Richard's Micro-fit gunstocks
http://rifle-stocks.com/

Sounds like a nice set-up. I have a M95 Large ring Mauser, .308 w/Douglas barrel.

Tabs,

HS Precision makes a nice tactical rifle. Now, we see tacticals coming from DPMS, Sako, etc. I like the 308 due to its inherent accuracy and low recoil. But, when you want to reach way out there, something in the magnums is nice. But, with a range compesating scope, the 308 works great. I have had an M 1A National Match for years. It is still shocking to me how a semiauto with iron sights can be such an accurate weapon. Absolutely a kick. My $0.02.

Tabs, how did you get in SHOT? Are you a FFL? Man, I wish I could have gone.

If you want a kick ass rifle, call Ted Yost and have him build you a scout.

I been driving for 30 years now. Never had an opportunity to need a seatbelt yet. Still buckle up everytime I get in though .... same reason I keep a couple of loaded weapons nearby that I hope to never use.

Purrybonker,

I play lots of BF42 and Desert Combat. Talk about fun! Try Call of Duty and the upcoming Far Cry for more of the same, only better.

Regarding guns; I like them. Always been fascinated by guns. I like target shooting and own guns too. Shooting animals is something I would never do. I like animals and see no reason to kill them for fun (I'd much rather hunt unarmed convicted criminals let loose in a "hunting area") Muahahahahahah. Yeah I'm a sick loonie

Why are people into guns? I don't know? Why do some people collect bottle caps? I don't know that either?

My neighbor's business is selling & setting up booths at conventions. I got into the Shot Show for free because of him. I als

Every human being has the potential for violence within. It takes acknowledgement of that potential to keep it in check. Many times I see anti-gun people being afraid of that potential for violence within themselves. They then project that fear onto the rest of the world.

Guns are inanimate objects, they have no will of themselves. If a gun is lying on a table and no human being moves it, it will still be lying on the table a 100 years from now. It takes the WILL of a human being to pick up and pull the trigger. NOw are guns more efficient than a bow and arrow, knife or club. The answer is yes it is, it is also more impersonal, in that you can be at a distance and still kill or wound. Guns have been a great equalizer between the physically weak and the strong.

Politically and socially guns give people the means to resist. To take guns away is another road block removed for those who would dominate.

Sorry, but in my mind there's no difference between a gun and say, a nuclear bomb. They are both designed for the same purpose.

When I look at my son, I see the beauty of human life. A gun's design and use is to violently destroy a human life.

You may argue that your use of guns is not like this... but the fact remains that that is what guns were made to do.

not all guns were designed to harm human or any other lifeforms. i saw a program on television, were they took a rail gun, a really big gun that moves a bullet at unbelievable speeds. i dont know how fast, but the units were kilometers per second. the purpose was to hit capsules (the target) filled with everyday stuff, seawater, water, oxygen, etc, with this hypersonic bullet to simulate an asteroid hitting earth at a low trajectory. they were studying the effects the extremes pressures were doing at the atomic level to see if earth could survive the big hit.
