bay area guys, found a good chicken taco
actually a really good chicken taco! on a tip. i took the 911 on a spin to...pittsburg. by the marina, at NEW MECCA, i think it is the name. it is at the end of the street, there will be a crowd forming. right across the street from the fair housing office. yummy, crunchy goodness. the place was buzzing with business. you kinda, drive through a sketchy hood, but your bravery will be rewarded....

My favorite was a chicken super-burrito and horchata at ElFarlitos (grand ave in ssf, 24th n mission in sf, and international and 42? in otown). Both for $4.75 and you'll waddle away.

I started going to the New Mecca 30 years ago. Never a change in quality. Everything they make is outstanding. That place is the real deal. Even the occasional grease fire in the kitchen. Wonderful. Chicken tacos are great. Try the shredded beef enchiladas and chile rellenos. Yum!!!

The best burrito/taco place in the bay area is La Cumbre (NOT the one if S.F.). La Cumbre of San Mateo has the best chicken and green salsa I've ever had in my life. Every single time I go I can't believe how good the chicken is. Trust me on this one, I'm not exagerating at all, it is wonderful.

ok, the best friggen sushi is in alemeda. (i cant believe i am sharing, haha) cheap! i mean two people can wound themselves eating too much for $25. SUSHI HOUSE! it is in a strange place. a shopping center off of otis. it is by far the most crowded restaurant that i am willing to go to. my record is 1.5 hours for a table of six. kinda nice, because some of the cutest girls i have ever seen are usually sitting next to you during the wait. just ignore the handsome boyfriends...

In the North Bay, Sushi Ran on Caledonia in Sausalito is very well known and very good. My secret place, though, is Sweet Ginger, also on Caledonia. Although the interior of Sweet Ginger is drab (Sushi Ran's interior is cool), the sushi is excellent (especially the rolls) and there's no wait (unlike Sushi Ran).
In SF, Ebisu, near Golden Gate Park, is generally considered the best. Hamano Sushi in Noe Valley and Ace Wasabi (a scene) in the Marina are very good.

a important criteria for me with sushi, is the price. i cant stand highend sushi, like blowfish in san fran. hell it isnt even cooked! i like fair pricing and big pieces. and sushi house turns the fish over really fast due to the huge crowds, so everything is uber fresh. very important, unless you are a pelican (the bird). jonseigel, thanks for the list.

920 C Street Hayward You will not be disappointed. The owner is actually from Guadalajara and has a couple cross-over dishes that are absolutely delicious.

Unfixed,
They generally have Toro on Friday nights - and it goes fast! These are a little bit of a departure from the regular Sushi/Sashimi thing, but.. The menu on the Right above the bar has an item called "Miru Butter". This is one of Nacho's (owner) dishes - Miru Gai sauteed together with some onions, mushrooms etc. and a little spicy. Another one is the Chinese Dynamite Roll - a deep fried Yellow Tail roll covered in one of Nacho's sauces - don't try to get the recipe for the sauce - it won't work! Enjoy!

the mecca is great! although i'm not sure i would consider it "authentic". just don't park out front.
other good mexican is guadalahara grille in concord/clayton. and of course there's los panchos. a good sushi joint is Matsu in pleasant hill or house of sake in walnut creek. |
