A Mini Duck?
So, I was driving home this evening and I had an Audi TT in front of me. I thought the wing looked a little like a mini Duck. What do you guys think?

true, true. but a side view might be more revealing
|
that tail was added after production started because evidently the rear end got a little light at high speeds, and some nasty crashed happened.
|
yes, 4 people were killed on the autobahn at speeds of 110+mph the car gets extremely light and floaty, causing the driver to lose control going around even the slightest bends. With the inception of the new semi-sequential gearbox, the wing has grown even larger than the original piece.

hmmm, somehow that just doesn't sound quite right to me. seems that this would have been something easily detected by wind-tunnel or track testing. is there any info to substantiate this?
|
I can't substantiate that, but I also did hear that about the TTs
|
Actually, I think that number of people killed in Audi TT accidents was 2.
But things could be worse: the ducktail was eliminated from the 911 in Europe because those who "knew better" thought it was a hazard to pedestrians. |
oh gawd, I remember those days. e.g. when the Mercedes (corsshairs) star was required to be on a flexible breakaway mount in case your friendly neighborhood Mercedes owner decided to take it upon himself to take a little drive down yon sidewalk looking for cheap entertainment.....
this of course resulted in the crosshairs becoming an easy theft target, as they were now quite easy to simply twist off. this led to many Mercedes owners rigging the crosshairs with a simple alarm that would activate the car's horn, should some hapless petty thief try to abscond with said booty. I found that out the hard way, as some "friends" of mine (I was 7 at the time) talked me into giving the star a tug because it would "tickle." needless to say, I damned near pissed my pants when the horn went off and I turned around to see the owner who had just emerged from the apartment comlplex heading towards me with a not so pleasant look on his face. this sensory overload persuaded me to hightail it out of there at a very high rate of speed and am convinced to this day that this was the formative experience which led to my later trophy-winning performances at many subsequent track meets |
Speaking of duck tails, does anyone on the board have the fender extentions mounted on their 911 in the fashion of the origional installation? I've only seen one inage of the set up (1973 RSR 3-liter prototype with L. Kinnunen & C. Haldi, 3 rd place at the Targe Florio)and it looked kinda cool.
