911 vs. Colnago Titanium 18 speed racing bike

I don't know - I went to the bicycle store to repair a tire on my road bike. Prominantly displayed in the window, on a stand, is a Colnago race bike. It probably weighs 15 or 16 pounds has top of the line Campy equipment on it, and rims that cost double that of a nice set of Fuchs. It was going for $6,700 - which is cheap, considering most full-race Colnagos hit close to $8-$10K depending on the edition.

So they get higher mileage than a 911 (of course), and can corner better (maybe)...

But in the meantime, one can get a 3.6 engine for $5,500 these days.

So I didn't buy the bike. Do you blame me?

If I were looking Ti, I wouldn't be looking at Colnago. Moots, or maybe Seven. Or Holland.

Yeah, the store had a Moots. What a deal: $4,500. I'm serious, too. It was a deal.

Buy a Litespeed Vortex with a DuraAce 10-speed groupo What you give up on the "brand" factor you will save in bucks. Put a set of Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL wheels on it. You will have a better equiped bike for about 5k. Just as light as the Colnago.

Or do what I did. Spend 2k + a little, on a 17 1/2 pound Cannondale with Dura-Ace and smile as you pass the rider on his 7K bike. Works for me.......

cool. I've been a Sycip fan for some time, along with Salsa (when Ross still owned them and they were in Petaluma...know I guess Soulcraft is some of the ex-Salsa guys), Steelman, Curtlo (used to be in SoCal), LandShark (I was out at Slawta's shop a few times before he moved north).

Any deals for Pelicans?

Go ahead and spot for a custom bike. You'll never go back to an off the shelf frame. I always thought I was pretty normal until I rode for a team which was sponsered by a frame builder (Gilmour) out of Tucson. I had a 1st generation Merlin at the time but he wanted me to ride his frame, so I sold the Merlin and he gave me a mountain and road frame. Since then I always have and will go custom(at least on my road bike).
Nice to know there some other bike geeks on this board as well.

Bart

Calfee custom
Independent Fab Cross
Moots Ti Ybb sl
Fat Chance
Rodriguiz rain bike (I do live in Seattle)
Salsa town bike (a very cool bike with all the Salsa goodies of the day late 80's vintage)
Oh yeah, 71T 2.7 rs

John?

Hey is that John from the bike shop in Fremont? I used to ride with Ben and in Brother-in-law Kevin (MTB back then) on Mission Peak. We'd hang out in your shop, then your brother Jeremy started building bikes - or maybe you are Jeremy and have no idea who I am!

tell ya what...go with a Trek 5500 and old Ultegra components and kick ass at half the price!!! When I was racing in europe back in the 80's the U.S. National team showed up at the Milk race with a mix of Ultegra 600 and 105 components...this was in the beginning stages of STI and everything was being tested, the end choice was the Ultegra stuff! I raced on Ultegra components for years on many frames (Trek, Aegis, Quattroassi, Specialized and a hand built frame from the UK) and that pretty much was based on the fact that Dura Ace may be a little better with a polished finish...but the Athlete on the bike is what matters!

OH...I went with the 3.6 and a Kona Stuff...now looking at a Stinky

Doubly OT:
It's a bike, and (gasp) it's designed by...Ferrari!

Otherwise, a Bititan, an Ovalmaster Titanio, and for the fiancee a Serota legend Ti. All Campa Record, various vintages.

Yep: I've seen them out here for $12,000.

But Sycip and Steelman, et al, are a much better use of not nearly as much money, IMO.

They were (and are) hugely expensive. I got it while I was working in a bike shop during my university years, from a racer, who hardly used it. Only way I could ever have one, as they are silly money.

I'm all sad because my wife can't understand (and has thus FORBIDDEN) me from buying a third bike - a singlespeed mountain bike.

This one of jtkkz's is nice (there are LOTS of nice ones).

I am riding a Rossin from the 80's with Super Record. It could be an '83 (same year as the SC!) Daily bike is a five speed generic aluminum Mt frame. Also building a Vitus "Yo -Bro" single cog conversion. Put your money in the engine. If you want the fastest bike: Ride more.

Every now and then, I take out my '85 Colnago Super with Super Record and ancient (by today's standards) clipless pedals (I forget the make). The bike is as sweet as the day I got it.

My LeMond, meanwhile, is like riding on a razor's edge compared to the Colnago.

Either way, both are great, though very different in many respects. I should get my Peugeot Carbon up to snuff - I haven't ridden that in like five years.

At the risk of throwing this into OT. And you think our cars are high tech...
I assemble all my bikes myself, even lace the wheels.
