Why have a gun in car?

I`d like to hear from gun owners who leave a gun in their car a good reason for it. Making a gun part of a car, like a tool box or spare tire, in the glove box, seems totally unjustified to me, and can only result in accidents such as 6-year-old accidentally shoots mom. This can also cause road rage tragedies such as: `he cut me off, so I shot him, Mr. officer...` and the like. If someone travels in an area so dangerous that one must be armed, he weapon should be worn, IMHO. Otherwise, guns have no place in a car. What say you ?

Oh, and if the child had been taught firearm safety (as I had at age 5), this wouldn't have happened. His parents are dumbasses.

Never met anyone who travels with a gun in their car - at least not that I know of.

I don't know the benefit, either: by the time "an event" does occur, one has to stop, take out the gun, ready it, aim, then shoot.

Seems faster to just speed away. Hint: keep foot in clutch.

Anyone who owns a gun and does not teach their children about safety is fully responsible for any accidents. They have not exercised good judgement!

Any parent who does not teach weapons safety to their children (you teach them not to run with scissors, no?) should feel ashamed! Even if you do not like guns, knives, etc, you should instruct your children how to act around them and what to do. At a minimum, every child should be taught to not touch, seek a parent!

Aurel, your concerns are addressed in concealed carry laws and proper enforcement of existing regulations. New laws and media buzzwords do not make the world a safer place. Knowledge and enforcement do.

Well, in New Jersey you can't carry a firearm unless you're hunting, transporting it to a range or have a judge appointed carrying permit. Not an easy task.... you have to have real good justification for needing it.

Just having a gun "loose" in the car sounds somewhat irresposible to me. However, as mentioned before, firearm education is essential to being a responsible owner.

Most good places to carry a gun on your person turn into not so good places when you are sitting, especially in a car. Even police, etc. have this problem. Also, the requirements for carrying a gun in your car are typically less than carrying on your person. As for leaving a gun in the car? Nope... theft is just too easy, and I don't feel like arming the criminal populace.

My car is an extension of my home. However, I don't usually leave my pistol in my car as I am too afraid of having my car broken into or stolen, without of course mentioning carparks where you have to leave your keys and the monkey parks baby. Otherwise I would keep something fullsize readilly accessable and out of sight in my car. Aurel, from your post I suspect you have little experience of responsible gunowners with permits. Typically we are the most peaceful, quiet and responsible people one could meet, we're usually the ones that walk away from troublesome situations. Parents with guns have a responsibility to teach proper handling and safety to their children. My daughter grew up around firearms and it was never any big deal. Today she also has a permit, I don't think most of her friends know about it - discretion is also something you have to practice and teach your children.

The whole hand gun thing has been discussed ad nauseum on multiple past threads in OT. Like the religious and political discussions posted here it all comes down to perception. I don't support the public carrying and I would never own a hand gun. Many of the people on this board feel 100% different.

I'm not certain that it's a bad idea if the public carries. I do think in terms of what Blue states, but then I also think about the irresponsibility many in urban places like L.A. display when it comes to personal safety and the safety of others.

It is rather a utopian viewpoint, I think, that an armed society is a safe society. I'd buy that for a country like America where all of us have so much to loose in the sense of our property and ideology. But how can it be done safely is another issue.

Research shows that localities that have "Right to Carry" laws have a lower incidence of crime...Floridia vs GB...than places that have strict or banned guns. Why because the criminal doesn't know what he is walking into vs a virtual known situation of being unarmed. Ironically gun violence is increasing dramatically in GB.

Liberia, Congo, Iraq, etc... All polite, peaceful societies at this moment because they are heavily armed.

Anyone who thinks that you can simply teach a toddler not to play w/ a loaded gun when they stumble across it is on crack. (Often literally true).

Anyone who leaves a loaded gun accessable to children, or criminals is a criminal themselves, plus a real *****-for-brains.

The problem w/ mass gun ownership is no IQ requirement. ANd the chances of needing a loaded gun in your car for self-defense are the same as for needing a portable rocket launcher.

there's also no minimum IQ requirement on driving licences and parenting.

I have often recognised the need for a portable rocket launcher when driving, especially on holiday weekends when I couldn't getaway early or stretch the weekend by an extra day.
