Jim,
It's a great place to live, if you have a job here or are independently wealthy. I was "downsized" last year. I was a network enginneer and have tons of experience in UNIX sysadmin and CISCO equipment, but couldn't find a job to save my life. After looking for a job for a year, I started a small home-based business just so I could stay in the area. I'm struggling, but I'm still able to keep the P-car. For the most part it is a very tolerant, liberal area with interesting, friendly people and alternative lifestyles. If you prefer the conservative route, just drive 20 miles in any direction and you can hear Rush Limbaugh blaring from pickup trucks. It doesn't have all the culture of DC, but there are some great restaurants and off beat theatre. The University tends to take itself too seriously, but it is also a nice source of culture, if that's what you're looking for. I've been here for 10 years now, and the pace is much slower that Northern Virginia. Hope this helps. |

Thanks, it seems a lot like the area I live in now but cheaper housing, more activities, etc.
I have been managing large estates and farm/estate excavation. There appear to be lots of large estates in the area. What are the schools like? What is a good area to live in? I think I would want to be on the North, Northwest side of town. What type of business did you start? Jim

I don't have kids, but I've heard that the schools are some of the best in the country. Some magazine recently rated Cville as the #1 place to live. If you do a search, I'm sure you'll find it referenced on the internet somewhere.
It gets rural in a hurry as you get out of town, so there a many desirable neighborhoods. A lot of people avoid living North of the city because Rt. 29 which runs north/south through Cville can be a bear at times, but compared to NOVA, it's a piece of cake. I'm doing a medical billing business for therapists. I have a link to the therapist community (my wife), so I'm developing software and providing services. I like working at home. My dogs get twice as much play time as they used to so they like it too! |
