A dangerous woman

I was driving down the very scenic Huron River drive this weekend, at a time when the bicyclist are out in full force hogging the sides of the road and also the cops set up their speed traps about then.

I enter the drive taking a posted 20 mph curve at 40 mph and in safety because there was no one around that curve. As I come up to cop hideout number one, I slow down to 35 mph then I notice this young woman starting to tail gating me on the straight away (she pulled out behind me near the dam). She leaves about two feet between us for several hundred feet, I know she wants to pass, but it’s a no passing zone- hey it’s a scenic drive. It takes no great skills to drive 50 mph on the scenic dive of 35 mph even in her Honda Civic (I do over 90 mph when it’s safe to). I don’t worry about what speed she wants to do, there are two more cop hiding places 150 feet and 250 feet ahead.

You guessed it, she passes me. I was doing 35 mph, she must have brought her car up to 55 mph in doing so.

So what’s to get upset about?

Well she almost killed ten people that’s all. Right at cop hide out number three, where there is the Maple bridge. At the edge of the road six older people (white hair everywhere) are on one side deciding to cross and waving on to their four friends already on the other side of the road. Some have already decided to cross when the crazy girl with a ponytail taking up both sides of the road comes barreling down on them at 55 or 60 mph.

There is a big difference between driving fast, and driving dangerously – the line was crossed that day. Where’s a cop when you need one?

So this woman was doing 55 or 60 on a road you often travel 90 on but she needs to be ticketed. Not sure I understand. The times when it's safe for you to travel these speeds must be under closed course conditions.

There is a certain section, a single flat large arc of a curve that runs along the river at which 90 mph and even 100 mph can be done safely. You get a great view of whats ahead just as you enter it. It's no blind curve, it must be close to 180 degress end to end, and fresh pavement to. The only catch is that sometimes there at illegaly parked cars on the river side shoulder, and as you end the curve, the cops can get a straight laser shot at you 1/4 mile away sitting on another bridge.

This however is not the section she choose, she choose to pass between a subdivision outlet, a main road intersection and capped by another crossing street which is connected to a bridge. Again on a Sunday, not the odd hours I do my self employed horsing around in.

I talked to a Ducatti rider a few weeks ago, he told me about a couple of tracks that I should go to. Seems like a good idea to take it to the limit there. However I doubt solving my problem will have any affect on this young womans judgement problem.

People routinely do double the speed limit and don't get caught. Meanwhile, I'm the guy who's overtaking a 50mph car in a 60 zone and gets ticketed for 90mph. My defense of impossibility (backed up by suitable math to prove I'm right) fails in the courtroom because the judge never got past 3rd grade math. Yup yup yup ...

The sooner you guys take a deep breath and acknowledge the fact that traffic enforcement is about revenue and not safety, your blood pressure will come back down to normal levels.

So so true.

It's not about protecting the public from themselves, that's for sure.

Once I was almost run off the highway by a drunk tailgating me. I tried to get ahead and hide in front of a big truck (worked once before about ten years earlier- similar situation), slowing down was not working. I got nailed for speeding. I mean why else would you be doing 80 in your wife's Geo Metro?

The cop lied in court and said there were no other cars around.

The magistrate/judge said there was no good reason for ever speeding (he must live on Mars).

I asked; not even to save my own life? He said there are no exceptions including for passing or running for your life.

I choose life!!!!!!!!

Take your laws off my body.

I wonder if your talking about the cops that died on 9/11 while attempting to save lives of people that they didn't know........

Or maybe your talking about several of our board members who have chosen police work, certainly not to get rich, but to serve the citizens of their communities......

Cops take their work breaks close to their patrol cars & with portable radios, so that they can respond to an emergency. It's their business and not mine, if they want to stop for coffee & whatever at a donut shop.............

I know from personal experience, that most cops are dedicated to serving the public.

Yesterday board members took pot shots at people that work on swimming pools (they referred to them as "pool boys") and also, gardeners. Today, it's, "let us slam law enforcement officers".

I can see where non-Porsche people might think P-Car owners have an "attitude" as it certainly rears it's head on this board, more and more - lately. ymmv

Just because most everyone lies in court, doesn't mean the cops are free to do it too.

The law is simple, never an excusable reason to speed- EVER. So why did he lie? Because he could, that's why.

Cops are people to, lets be realistic about it.

FYI: I had just finished the design for the State of Michigan fallen trooper memorial. My experience in court alterered the way I felt for a very long time. Before that, I kind of teared up when speaking about the design and what it meant to me, now it means very little to me.

I would be happy to take any of you on a ride along with me in one of the most violent cities in America. There are shootings, robberies and rapes on a daily basis. Unfortunately, you do not get to carry a gun or wear a bulletproof vest because you are not a cop. You can sit in the car with me during the wee hours of the night while all of the critics sleep comfortably in their safe beds. You would be surprised at the professionalism and dedication that cops display on a daily basis.

Any takers?

David

I don't know where you are on Huron River Drive that I would want to drive my Porsche. I live close to Flat Rock and HRD is a torture track for SUV's or something. This road feels like it has a speed bump every 25 feet. Also, lay off the cops. Just like any other profession, you have your good and not so good. It is a tough job and I don't want to do it.

David, I don't think anybody criticised that function of the police. They did criticise other things. And, police are held to a higher standard. No body gets drafted to be a cop. Surely, your globe & anchor icon indicates you understand that.

In Houston the local news station followed cops to McDonnalds. They weren't even on their break. Then they falsified their reports saying they were busy when the radio dispatch called them. Even cops goof off and lie, it's just unfortunate we pay them and need them.
