True story (Neurosurgery)
Years ago here was a well known neurosurgeon named Tyschenko who ran the brain surgery department at a prominent California hospital. He was famous for long, tedious operations on difficult brain tumors. His surgeries would typically last between 12 and 36 hours. During these operative marathons he would frequently go many hours at a stretch without speaking a word. On occaision, he would put a catheter in his bladder before surgery to avoid trips to to restroom. He once operated for 27 hours straight without a break.
Needless to say, being chosen as his assistant was like entering the third circle of hell. One day a promising young neurosurgery resident drew the short straw and was selected to assist Dr. Tyschenko on a difficult case. After 12 hours of surgery in a quiet operating room devoid of conversation, the young surgeon broke the silence; "Dr. Tyschenko, may I ask a question? Several moments passed before the senior surgeon replied; "Yes." "Have you ever had one of these tumors reoccur during the surgery?"
