Anyone into Early VW Buses

I have really wanted to get a stock 58 or 59 stock single cab bus. The thought of driving something with a 36hp engine would be awesome.

Sure I have had plenty of VW buses. with stock Reduc/boxes and 36 hp your topping out at 60 down hill and 35 up hill. I would go with a stock 50 hp 1600 single port at a minmum,If you plan to drive anywhere other than around town.

Steve's right. Driving a 36 horse bus or bug was agonizingly slow. You'll get tired of that in a hurry. By the way, I have a roof rack for an early bus I'm going to sell if anybody's interested. Excellent condition - $250. Also have a VW tow bar.

John Walker likes busses. But I don't think any of his still have 36 hp.

36hp ended in early 59; late 59 saw the bastard 40hp. You'd be better off with the 36hp!

I had a '55 westfalia (3rd oldest known to exist - the other 2 are in the Westfalia museum) with a 36hp. 100Kph on the freeway was pushing it, maybe 105 with a tail wind.

A lot of people run 1600's in early VW's; if you ever wanted to go back, it's very easy.

I currently have a '60 DD panel and a '61 double cab - both with 1600's

Check out http://vintagebus.com some time.

I like the crew cabs, myself. Especially with a 3.0 or better in back.
