Just "lost" our pet ferret

Our pet ferret "Wicket" just died last Saturday from old age and adrenal disease. We had her for 6 years and got really attached to her, she was a sweetheart and loved to play with kids! We have another Ferret (Corky) and we're getting two more babies at the end of June, but we really miss Wicket. Here's a picture of her when she was healthy and happy!

Art,

Until I spent some time living in the midwest, I never understood the ferret as a pet thing. A neighbor had one as a pet for their daughter. One night for dinner at their house, and I was sold on the concept. Smart, clean, and loved to play.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

singpilot,

Thanks for the kind words. I never thought of a ferret as a pet until my veterinarian friend gave me Wicket when he moved to Africa. Wicket was always friendly and loved to play and Corky seems to have a gift for getting into trouble. The two babies we're getting in June should keep him busy! They are the perfect pet for us and they provide alot of entertainment, affection and fun! My ferrets don't like driving in the Porsche, though...

Sorry about that loss Art. I know how it is when your attached to a pet. Wicket is probably enjoying his family as he waits for you guys in a better place now.

I had started a thread the other day inquiring about how ferrets are as pets and you seem to have had very good experiences with them. Hmmm... maybe I see a ferret in my future.

Clint

Even the loss of a family pet is a tough event to get over. Sorry to hear about Wicket.
Are ferrets "legal" pets? I've known several people who have had them and never heard anything negative about them as a pet. I thought they were on the endangered species list or maybe it's just a California thing.

It's an extremely outdated California law that bans ferrets because of the potential problems if they get established in the wild. To my knowledge, none of the fears are reality based.

Moses is right, domesticated ferrets aren't endangered, only the black-footed ferret is endangered and it's not the same as a domesticated ferret. We have had three ferrets over the past 6 years and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Ferrets aren't legal in California. Clint, let me know if you have any questions about them, I think they're great!

Sorry for your loss.

What's the story behind Wicket's name?

Cheers
Mark

Mark,
My friend the veterinarian named her after a character from Star Wars. I think there was a creature in the movie called an "Ewok" that looked alot like the ferret. We named Corky after a character in a movie called "Waiting for Guffman".

Another pic

Here's my son and the two ferrets. Corly is the larger of the two and Wicket is the smaller.
