Any coin collectors out there...

I've been given about a hundred pounds of coins collected by wife's grandfather. There's all kinds of oddball stuff in there, problem is I don't know what it's worth. Some dates back to 1894. Thx.

I am a former collector, it was an expensive hobby, not that owning a Porsche isn't. What kind of coins and which countries are you looking at.

I'm currently trying to collect as many coins as possible!

I hope to be able to get out of the hobby by the age of 50! ;)

I had a two-headed Sacajewa dollar but sold it for $20.

I also had a double-struck 1955 penny but I only was able to get about $50 for it.

Just kidding.

What do you have, anything interesting?

My father in law typed 8 pages of inventory: proof sets, dimes, quarters, half-dollars and silver dollars. I went on e-bay and nosed around, but it's too mind-numbing tryin to finger it all out. I just don't want to be on the wrong side of a found in a barn story!:D

I'll save you some trouble by giving you $200 for the entire set. ;)

Take your time, shop them around at local coin collectors, take pictures and send the CD with the digital pics and scanned images of the inventory to coin dealers and see what happens. Take your time and wait for a deal that sounds reasonable...

I like the sound of that...I'll try that and let you know how it turns out. Who knows, maybe a twin-plugged 3.8 for the track car:eek:

If you have questions, some of us may know so post pictures occasionally. Also, if you have any old currency that you would like to get rid of, let me know.

Yep, take your time. It's not like you have a storage space problem...

I had (or have) my dad's stamp collection from when he was a boy in the 30's. He just had the run of the mill stuff that neophytes get, I guess. I tried to get some interest in examining the collection now and then as I met people who seemed to know a bit about it. I wondered if there was something in there that might fortify my retirement, but worried that I would never know what it was. Someone could lift it and I would never know. What do you do?

One guy who looked it over said nothing special. Think about that. Hadn't been opened in probably 60 years and nothing special.

lowyder993s - if your thinking of selling, take your time and definitely see several dealers.

What do you have from 1894? Some of the coins from that year are worth a few bucks. Let me know, I have the current Red Book which lists retail prices. Not necessarily the best guide for what a dealer would pay, but a good resource nonetheless. I have sold a few coins on eBay, it can be a little time consuming and tedious, but it can be done.

Nothing to do with coins but my FIL that has always lead a pretty modest life as a house painter found out some land he owns in Scottland is worth $500K.

Needless to say he is happy to know that and he will be able to call it quits in the near future if he so chooses
