CNC Engraver: Any DIY experience?

I'm kicking an idea around for my 7 yo daughter.

I'd like to introduce her to business ownership and thought it would be cool to set her up with a Pet Tag business. Unfortunately the cost of either a Graphotype (stamps the characters) or a CNC engraver are very high. I've checked Ebay for some time with no luck. Also, while I'd purchase a reasonably priced stamper, the engraver apparently does a better job.

So, it's not looking likely that I'm going to attempt the build of a stamper but a CNC engraver might be possible. The only DIY info I've found was here http://www.luberth.com/cstep/

Anyone have experience or suggestions on a DIY engraver?

Just an idea but are their other methods available? Mabye acid etching or a stamp and a small press with softer metals?
