I live withing a stones throw of a number of refineries...If what he says is true (and I'm not saying it is without merit) then I should be getting some lower gas prices simply because I'm close.

That certainly isn't happening. I do remember a time in 2001-2 where regular got down to $.89/gallon at the Arco stations...It was amazing but I can't recall the exact time frame.

I read a rebuttal to this argument somewhere about companies shuttering refineries to artificially lower the supply.

Wow, I hope they didn't record those conversations...

This guy is full of baloney. We also have a shortage of rafinery in Canada for the simple reason that they are closing them one after the other. When Canada signed the Kyoto Accord 6 years ago the oil industry was pretty sure that the oil consumption would go down so the decided to lower their production.
The problem is that all those big SUV and Pick-Up Trucks consume more gas than ever before.

What are you talking about, gas costs so much ? Gas in the US is the cheapest in the entire world. I really don`t get it. Look outside !

Actually, gas costs roughly the same everywhere in the world, (excluding transportation costs), the only difference in final consumer price is the amount of taxes that are attached.

Based on annual U.S. CAFE standards that is not true at all.

It would be interesting to see what percentage of all new passenger vehicles sold are those "big SUV and Pick-Up Trucks" in comparison to the number of licensed vehicles sold in total per year for say the last 10 years. Also would be interesting to see the minimum average required mpg for "big SUV and Pick-Up Trucks" vs. a function of their gross weight, as sold new over the last 10 years by year...

I'm sure the usual increase in population and licensed drivers has NOTHING to do with it though...
