"Five-O" ?

Where does the term "Five-O" come from when referrring to Police Officers? I know there was the show, but that was before my time (watching late night TV anyway).

I know Pelicans know all....

I always thought it was a refrence to cop cars and engines since Crown Vics and Mustangs have 5.0 liter motors.

nostatic 06-09-2004 10:48 AM

from Hawaii 5-0, the TV show.

book 'em, Dano.

azasadny 06-09-2004 10:50 AM

I believe the TV show "Hawaii Five-O" was named that because Hawaii was the 50th state admitted to the union. When the show became very popular, other police came to be called "Five-O" also. I went to a college called Ferris State College (now Ferris State University) and we called the campus "police" the "Ferris Five-O" for laughs!

That's kind of a dumb idea and doesn't really decribe anything. Then again, these are TV people we're talking about.

Supports Art's statement, but still seems so dumb.

GrindingGears 06-09-2004 12:04 PM

Art is correct, I've had this conversation with a number of my hawaiiian buddies, 5-o origianlly came from being the 50th state.

I thought it was the rating of the weed they grow.

"Dood, this is 'bout a five oh. Las' week we had some seven, blew yer head off, man. I can't do nine or ten anymore, can't find the floor behind that *****."

dd74 06-09-2004 01:58 PM

Amount of doughnuts they ate before beginning their shift.

Wasn't the opening surf scene shot at Diamond Head?

Patch me through to McGarret...

nostatic 06-09-2004 03:13 PM

the opening wave is Ala Moana bowl. The beach sequence is Wai Ki Ki, but the "big wave" is actually a 5-6' day at Ala Mo.

Never mind that the show was on the air ~20 years before Ford started refering to any motor or car as a "5.0", or that police Crown Vics do not have 5.0 engines, or.........

Waaaaaatever.

dd74 06-09-2004 03:23 PM

I always got sort of seasick in the opening when the camera would do that fast pan right into "Yack" Lord's face...

...then he'd turn, and I'd feel like I'd fallen off the balcony he was stood on.

Eh, "The Waltons" was a safer show.

Sorry I was born in the 70's when I guess that show came out, actually I am not sorry. :D

I am also not sorry I don't know crap about old Fords, I am a Chevy guy and I know a Caprice has the 5.7.

Anyways think and do a search before you blast someone: 80's crown vics do have a 5.0

Waaaaaatever

I went to a smaller university in KY and we used to call our campus "Police" the "WKU two-fives" because we felt they were half cops.

Sure every Surfer knows that it is Avalanche Outter Haleiwa. Some will say its Jockos but Its not. Ala Mona was a good guess but not correct,

Ala Moana you can tell the 50 wave is not this wave due to the Bowl at Ala Moana where the bottom drops out and the wave turns.
