Uh oh! Beware the book readers!

""As people do better, they start voting like Republicans - unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing"

Superman 06-23-2004 08:48 AM

I lost the argument, or at least did not win it, regarding the relationship between political affiliation and education level. Nevertheless, we have a striking concentration of educated people here in Western Washington (something like 25% have Masters' Degrees), and it so happens we are voracious readers. I think those might both be national records. Average education level and book sales. So, Mul may be correct in that we are too stupid to button our own shirts, but we sure can rip through literature. And we're extremely liberal here. Extremely. (You should have seen the Freemont Fair last weekend)

Rot 911 06-23-2004 08:52 AM

If the New York Times book review is any indication, I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed readers. On the other hand, I really wonder how many people bought the book because of the hype and never end up reading it? By the way in my town of Jefferson City, the book is already being discounted the 2nd day on the racks!

techweenie 06-23-2004 09:04 AM

Most larger chains routinely discount all bestsellers.

I know it's the fervent hope of many that the Clinton book will not be read, but with over a million sold, and typical pass-along for this type of book at 4-5 readers, there will be little solace for those who don't want Clinton heard.

Begin Rant:

"Too much education" sums up those with advanced degrees in useless liberal arts studies. These are the mental masturbators now criticizing the action-oriented President; trying to clean up the neglect of Muslim (extremist-OK?) issues beginning with Carter.

Degrees requiring math and science proficiency are actually an accomplishment. Usually conservative or independent (isolationist) types.

Then, there are the rank and file IT "professionals" I encounter, with dubious educational credentials, ranging from self-taught to "I took a class..." in some very specific application. Usually akin to the former group and quite liberal.

Bill Clinton is living proof that an "educated ahem", well-spoken, clever man can, in the end, be judged lacking in character and spirit.

Maybe if I read the book, I'll realize he's actually a visionary well ahead of his time.

A few appropriate book names:

When in Doubt, Do Nothing...The Clinton Story
or
How to Reach the Top of the Heap and Still be a Dishonorable Failure
or
I May Be a POS, but Y'all Voted Me In
or
When I bite my lip, I'm Thinkin' a You, Baby

End Rant

http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif couldn't have said it better myself. even with its high rate of literacy, the Northwest does seem to be awash in college graduates that couldn't articulate one single, well-thought-out ideological argument if their life depended on it. yet they enjoy broad-based liberal media and institutional support simply because they're, well, liberal

Superman 06-23-2004 10:32 AM

Right again, Bob. It's WAY too much education for those new jobs your president "created." Clever way to fix the education problem in our country. Manipulate the job market so that everyone who's been through the seventh grade has more than enough education for the job opportunity. And definitely, absolutely do not give any respect to students of things like history. All that is, is a bunch of stories about what happened in the past. Irrelevant, like the United Nations.

Superman 06-23-2004 10:42 AM

Interesting, ronin. I know some useless, educated liberals that I'd love to introduce to you, and then just sit and listen to the discussion. You may still come away feeling like the liberal did not articulate a single well-thought-out ideological argument, but I can find some polysci partners for that discussion that would make it HIGHLY entertaining for someone like myself to watch. In fact, some are student body presidents with a fair amount of debate experience. Like I say, you might pretend like nothing cogent was said, but I can find some folks who would make it look like an absolute massacre.

In fact, why don't you ask a polysci professor at Evergreen if you can address a class of these liberal idiots. Make in an undergraduate class (undergraduates are people who have not yet earned bachelor degrees) so that your prowess can be more easily recognized. I'd buy a ticket.

ronin 06-23-2004 10:46 AM

soopy, oh great prognosticator of all that is leftist, even you don't believe the BS you just wrote, as (were it true) it would leave all other "choice" jobs for the well-educated liberal masses. as for the issue of history, it is the left that is predominantly guilty of blatant revisionism and engaging in AmnesiaFest 200X whenever it serves their best interests. in fact, academia is rampant with it. always nice to be immune from reality when ensconced within the safe confines of hallowed university walls where no one is there to challenge you

ronin 06-23-2004 10:49 AM

oops. the previous post was intended to your previous post. as for the challenge at Everstoned: in an insane asylum only the one lone normal person will be judged insane

BlueSkyJaunte 06-23-2004 11:02 AM

Ignore "Best-Seller Lists". This is a more accurate gauge of what people are actually reading: http://www.usatoday.com/life/books/news/2004-06-16-most-borrowed-list_x.htm

VenezianBlau 87 06-23-2004 11:27 AM

Super, I do enjoy reading your posts for your unwavering sense of literary style and general wordsmithing.

However, I believe your points are made by lawyerly debating tactics rather than on substantive merit. Successful liberals must have this quality to offset their flawed positions.

History studies differ from hard science in that they are open to interpretation since people do not act in a demonstrably reliable manner. Interpretation leads to indoctrination. While renting a car last week, the counter clerk told another customer "I have a history degree and this is where I work." What's the point of formal history studies for the average history undergrad? To produce more history professors? I'm an independent student of history. The body of knowledge is not limited to the classroom.

The U.N. is relevant to the extent that we must all strive to find jobs for folks skilled at artfully debating untenable positions to the ultimate result of innaction. Seriously, the U.N. is useful for providing innoculations, condoms, and similar humanitarian auspices.

Cheers,
Bob

Super, Debate experience is a joke. It basically teaches you how to win an argument based on picking apart minutia and overstating technicalities. Rarely if ever is the actual resolution....resolved. Yes, I was in debate, actually taught the team my senior year, and hold the record for career victories. What's it all worth? NADA, zilch, nothing. In the end you have proven nothing, but you sure "feel" smart. Odd that this is how I feel most liberals argue, including most in here:)

In an unusual front-page review in Sunday's New York Times, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Michiko Kakutani called Clinton's reminiscences "sloppy, self-indulgent and often eye-crossingly dull -- the sound of one man prattling away, not for the reader, but for himself and some distant recording angel of history."

I thought this book was setting 'single-day fiction sales records.

Just goes to show what I've always known was true: Chicks like big *****s.

island911 06-23-2004 01:03 PM

ya mean "BIG chicks like. . ."

singpilot 06-23-2004 01:39 PM

You guys have all missed the point.

At this moment, there are over 700 autgraphed copies of Clinton's book offered for sale at a premium markup on eBay.

THAT'S the reason those people stood in line to get his autograph.

What a laugh.
