Wouldn't in make more sense to just fire your foreign born gardener (I'm not gonna pick on any specific country in the hemisphere) or your housecleaner tomorrow? Or how about don't buy any foriegn made goods tomorrow? (Yes, that includes Germany)

I'd rather have them legal and paying taxes than not. Get rid of illegals, and the CA economy really goes into the toilet.

Some of us don't hire illegals to do our grunt work but I am sure that doesn't apply to all of pelican's members.

I think prison time for people that knowingly hire illegal workers would be a good way to nip the whole illegal immigration thing in the bud.

oh were it that simple. The issue isn't the gardeners and domestics...its farming.

You send home all the illegals, be ready for food shortages and paying $10 for a head of lettuce.

God forbid we pay more for our produce to get rid of illegal wage slavery in the US . . .

Only in SoCal and other border areas would people start to believe that you NEED illegal immigrants for society to function.

If you want to save some more money on your food and other labor intensive products why don't we just scrap the minimum wage, worker saftey laws, environment laws and all the other progress our country has made over the past 100 years while we are at it.

YOU will be paying that price for the food. Where do you think the US gets its produce? It ain't just us locals that would feel the effect.

Complex problems do not have simplistic answers. Giving amnesty to the illegals that are here could be the first step toward creating living wages and transforming the industry. But taking a knee-jerk approach of "just throw people in jail" will only make matter worse.

If someone is making an honest living doing jobs that no one else wants, does it really matter if they have a piece of paper saying they are legally in the country? Why is the such a to do over "illegals"?

Like Todd said, if they get legal status, they will be paying taxes. Where's the problem?

I am normally one to believe that jail should only be reserved for violent criminals that threaten society, but I used that statement to point out that the reason illegal laborers in the US have work is because people can hire them and fear no repercussions.

Lets make it a $1,000 fine per worker or something, but the fact is that since so many southern economies are propped up by exploiting third world worders the authorities just look the other way regarding this illegal activity.

Like any major problem the solution is simple but the powers that be and the masses wanting to save a buck DON'T want to fix the problem.

I agree with the second part, but disagree with the first part. Major problems don't generally have simple solutions. The complexity of the system make things very difficult to sort out. The interdependence of various aspects of economy and society make this a sticky wicket at best.

Do the thought experiment. Put your law into practice. Fines or jail time for employers. Now shut down the farming industry while it figures out how to deal with that. Then increase food prices across the board. Then see how that affects people's personal budgets and purchases. It gets ugly very quickly.

Nothing is going to happen. Illegals won't get kicked out of the country, while I also doubt many illegals in So. Cal will willingly seek amnesty or leave. There are too many opportunities for reasonably good work (when compared to no work) for them to in turn go back to Mexico.

Regardless, the economy is far stronger than any law or presidential decree. Illegals will continue to cross the border, and the collective "we" who can afford to have them cut our lawns and clean our houses, will continue to employ them as such.

I find it ignorant to think this should or will be corrected. Money buys convenience and some people are willing to work for the money offered in return for that convenience. We're to blame anyway: as Americans, we're above that sort of work, aren't we?

What sickens me is the back-handed way the administration went about this. Cheap votes. That's all.

No I dont but they were stepping stones. We are stealing that work ethic from the teenagers. The jobs that were done by young people are now done by CRIMINAL ALIENS. Steve

Yeah, Steve, let's see you do that and keep your Porsche.

How old were you when you mowed lawns? 14?

And at whatever you do for a living, how important is the Mex-American, or just "Mexican" economy? Or any "illegal" economy.

My question is, can Americans still function without them -- economically? I seriously doubt it.

Here's the biggest argument, friend: it was theirs before we "took" it from them.

That's laughable. What work ethic?

Spend ethic is our current responsibility to our teenagers.

Oh and "Wetbacks?" Uh-huh. Shows where your heart lies.
