When one personality dies, another is born....
I have been following the nuttiness around here the past couple of weeks regarding Mul and Yank. As we have seen little of either, I notice a new personality cropping up. I could be wrong, but I really don't think so. How would you find this board of all places on the internet and only post in the OT section?
My apologies if the poster is a real person (that doesn't already have an account). Anyone want to try and guess who it is?

Shouldn't be hard. A simple IP trace by one of the mods would place him/her/them easily.

Regarding the Yankee and Mul screenames......
It is Dick Cheney and John Edwards. Just warming up for next month's debates.

I used a much less scientific method of looking at a person's profile and seeing that all posts were made in OT.
OT is like a dark bar down a side street. You don't wind up here by accident. Don't stay too long either or you can never leave....

If you notice there is a link in the lower right portion of your post that says IP logged.
Now if two people you suspect is really one are posting from the same subnet it leads people to believe they are one and the same. No way to say 100% (assuming dynamic IP) that they are the same person with out getting the ISP to verify. Which of course unless you have a legal reason the ISP will not do. Mods should be the only people that can see the IP that is logged

A conventional IP trace doesn't tell you a whole lot. It might tell you if two members that are simultaneously posting are the same person, but not much more than that. There is nothing going on here that is riveting enough to deserve that much research.
Isn't the location given on a trace nothing more than a location for an administrative contact of that domain? What good is the IP address or the registered physical location of the router or the public side of the firewall that these people are posting from behind? Unless they are at work or the public library they are more than likely going to have a dynamic IP address assigned every few days anyway. |

It would be interesting to see the IP's for no other reason than it would expose people having debates with themselves, or posting from other accoutns to back themselves up.

Even with dynamic IPs (if two different posters are the same person) the first two quads will be the same and you'll be able to at least trace him/her to a specific ISP. That often gives you a geo location as well.

It would be an interesting coincidence if two separate screen-names had the same subnet. It's certainly possible that two people who post under different names, and are in fact two separate people, happen to live coincidentally very near one another, and have the same ISP. It is unlikely, of course, that a BBS that draws international audiences would draw two people of such character from roughly the same geographic location.

A dynamic IP address for a machine is generally leased for a few days at a time or renewed with the next available address as the machine gets back onto the network. If one poster is logging in and out of the pelican site with a different user account and arguing with himself, the posts should be from the same IP address for the period of the IP lease.
If the users had different IP's in the same rough period of time chances are good that they are not the same person. They may be getting an address from the same router or live in the same neighborhood and have the same ISP, but the posts are probably not coming from the same machine. My service provider at the house occasionally assigns an IP that is not even close to being on the same subnet as my previous IP when it renews my address. Hopefully, the ISP is not going to give up any info about who is posted from what IP address. Checking IP addresses is a lot more research than its worth. It's easier to log into the SQL editor for the database and delete someone from the user table ![]() Last edited by Shuie; 07-07-2004 at 03:31 PM.. |

So if I post at home, go the public library and post again and then go to an internet cafe downtown at Borders or some other public location--you guys can differentiate whether I'm a retired older man or a teen who likes to pull Mull's chain?
Very interesting discussion. |
