widebody: no sir. I must disagree. perhaps I should have made myself a bit clearer. the correct enunciation would be "dey i'da debbil." with an increase in pitch and immediate truncation of the I sound. "dey be" would also not be correct, as this type of pronoun usage is not common to the Louisiana bayou

Ronin, please check your lexicon. The Louisiana bayou use of verbs clearly stems from a combination of French, Chicaree, and Akkadian. i'da, as you describe, is clearly a derivative of the Brazilian usage of the verb. i'da is actually still in debate among some lexicographers as the origins are somewhat runic. Many argue that the use originates from the Hammidic tribes of Brazil, and the word seems to have been used to describe the shape of a cow. Others cite the similar word ee'da as being a related root word. ee'da is primarily used by the Zephyritic indians of Africa to describe something which "is;" it is unclear how the word migrated from Africa to the Bayou.
Whoah, too much time in the old word book ...

Jane, you ignorant slut! you have singlehandedly ignored the Upper Voltanese dialectic influence on the bayou after the little known but nonetheless influential First Transgressional Migration (June 12th to 13th, 1832) which brought the now-common (and correct) use of "i'da" to the Louisiana area. and your reference to the Zephyrites, puhleese, the only thing substantial that they brought to the spoken word was their irregular (but nonetheless ingenious) use of audible clicks within protracted strings of diphthongs. nuff said...

No, the Zephyritic nuances were clearly more influential than you ever imagined. In Dr. Hanson's excellent work "The Bayou Dialects (aka Da Bayou Dah-lex)," he explains the link quite clearly. You see, with the coming of the second world war, many eyes in imprisoned Europe turned hopefully, or desperately, to the freedom of the Americas. Lisbon became the great embarkation point. But not everybody could get directly to Lisbon, and so, a tortuous, roundabout refugee trail sprang up. Paris to Marseilles, across the Mediterranean to Oran, then by train, or auto, or foot across the rim of Africa to Casablanca, in French Morocco. Here the fortunate ones, through money, or influence, or luck, might obtain exit visas and scurry to Lisbon, and from Lisbon to the New World! But the others wait in Casablanca, and wait ... and wait ...
You see, the connection is obvious, no? ![]()
