Mozilla/Firefox- hard getting used to tabs (not that one)

After worrying about all the Internet Explorer bugs, I decided to try Mozilla's Firefox. The tabs feature is great, but I keep forgetting about the tabs feature and open a new window.

Seems to works the same as IE. Except for the tabs and being more secure, what else does it have?

Now back to our regularly scheduled show... Bush vs Kerry, Mul vs Yankee.

I started using Firefox today. I think it's great, I'm not using the tabs though.

It seems faster than IE to me.

I tend to navigate without the mouse a lot (carpal tunnel), so I find the keyboard shortcuts really useful.

Ctrl-T opens a new tab, and Ctrl-PgUp and Ctrl-PgDown switch between tabs quickly. Ctrl-F4 closes the active tab.

Ctrl-L puts you into the location (URL) bar where you can type an address.

The bookmark bar also lets you open up an entire folder of sites, one per tab. If, like me, you check a bunch of news sites every morning, it's really easy to just go to that folder, click "Open in Tabs", and have everything start up right away.

My favorite: To search for text on a page, just hit "/" and start typing in what you're looking for. It will be highlighted. Then you can press F3 to repeat the search. IE never did support F3 correctly.

There's also a plugin that reconfigures firefox to open any "new window" page in a new tab instead. For example, when there is a link in a Pelican message, it automatically opens in a tab instead of a window. (You can also click while holding CTL to do this).

One more thing - download the "Adblock plugin" and you can selectively remove images from individual pages. You can also exclude directories on a site - like "/ads/*jpg" so you never have to see casino graphics again. It's GREAT.

I've been using tabs in Apple's Safari for about a year and a half... couldn't imagine life without them now!

Hey, does Firefox mess up this website sometimes? Sometimes, the Pelican catalog is compressed on the right half of the screen. Anyone else have that problem with Firefox? jurgen

Yes, I see that too. A refresh (CTRL+R) will fix it.

No browser hijacks with FireFox, either!!

Uh, "tinfoil hat" implies unreasonable paranoia. Is it unreasonable to stop using IE with so many security extant?

Neilk 06-30-2004 10:14 AM

Colin,

Thanks for the Firefox tips. I am now sold on it. No more IE for me.

KobaltBlau 06-30-2004 10:35 AM

you will love the tabs once you get used to them. But you will never love tabs, he is impossible to get used to.

No, just trying to incite people to read the link :)

BlueSkyJaunte 06-30-2004 10:45 AM

Oh.

Gah, what a typo, I meant "so many security flaws extant" but you got my meaning, I trust. :D

Yeah I told Wayne about this but he said he couldn't justify fixing it for that small %age that don't use IE. Start a petition!

Btw - middle click to open links in a new tab, middle click on the tab to close it
