VW Golf r32?
Saw this car on way home last night. 2 exhaust tips on either side like an Audi. Looks like it had racing buckets driver and passenger side. Other than that looks like a regular Golf. Is this aftermarket stuff or is it factory? Would it have an 8 cylinder 32 valve motor?

I saw one on a VW lot - looked at the $31K sticker and walked away not looking at any other details.
All factory stuff - 240HP VR6, 6spd, 4Motion, 18" wheels, seats, etc. Supposed to be a blast to drive - can't get the car upset with the 4Motion system. Don't think I want to spend $30+K on a Golf though.

I've heard that a stage II twin-turbo kit would bring the power of that car near 500hp. And it would still be covered under factory warranty.
I sat in one at the dealer we bought my wife's New Beetle Turbo (great car for her, BTW). It was comfortable inside, but I'd really like to drive it to see what it's all about. But for the cost savings, a 'regular' Golf GTI would be fine for commuting and alll.... -Z.

I have heard thay are really hard to find and if you can they are real careful about letting people test drive! I wanted to try one out, but kinda gave up when I couldn't locate one. I sat in one at the car show in December. With the sport seats and a leather jacket on, my fat a$$ couldn't fit in comfortably. (I'm ~199 lbs).

They are factory. Uses a 3.2 liter six engine. VERY fun to drive and will eat a GTI's lunch. The 4motion adds a bit of fun to the car. If I had the money and didn't care about fuel economy for my daily I would buy one.
For now though I will stay with my Jetta TDI and save to install an Upsolute Stage III kit. Boosts power to 170 hp and torque to over 300 ft lbs. Not bad considering stock it was 90hp/155 ft lbs. Drove one last night and that sold me. If I can keep my foot out of it the fuel economy will not be to badly affected and when I want it to it will pull like a freight train.

too little, for too much, too late, AND too heavy...
Maybe 3 years ago it would have been great (I think that's when Europe got it) but by now, 240 hp, 4wd, for over $30K?? What's the point, unless you're one of those people with a Wolfsburg tattoo or something similarly devotional to the brand. I think VWs are cool, but they lost their way with the Golf. Does that car really *need* navigation? The guy that wants that in his car is not looking for a The car is simply not special anymore. It's rare, and handles ok... but that's what RPI (from Canada, I believe) has been building for much less than that. I've seen great A2 Golfs w/ a 4Motion "grafted" onto them w/ a built up VR6... 5 years ago. Light, fast, and reliable too. While I'm on this rant, why couldn't US market get the 4Motion Golf, Jetta, or even the A3 earlier? So they wouldn't compete w/ each other?? How come no one in Europe sees this as a problem? Do Saab and Subaru think they are competing and taking sales from each other? I don't get it... |

Saab and Subaru are now working together - hence the 92X. WRX mechanicals wrapped in a 93X-like package.

People that buy VW's don't always buy Audi and meanwhile there is Subaru stealing customers b/c of the traction benefit (New England etc.) How many more sales would VW have if they offered a cheaper EUROPEAN alternative to Subaru? |

the car is definitely a viable competitor to Subaru's WRX and the like. drove one about a month ago and was duly impressed. the lower CG than the GTI's and the added horsepower make it one big blast to drive. when comparing the R32 to the current competition, the pricetag isn't bad at all. VW really did pay attention to the details on this car, and the exhaust note at full tilt only adds to the fun

One of the guys (Cain I believe) brought his new one by TRE yesterday. Very nice car. Yes, they are 30K, but the difference in the interior materials shows why you're paying more vs. a WRX. I still need a 4-door wagon though to replace the 4-runner (R32 doesn't have enough cargo space). WRX remains the front-runner for me.

I'm strongly considering trading my MINI in on one if I can find a silver one at window here in CA. I've driven one and didn't really like the numbness compared to the MINI (or the extra bulk), but I really need the AWD for ski trips in the winter and the naturally aspirated VR6 motor with that sweet power boost is really making it appealing.
nostatic, take a look at used Mitsu EVO prices, their value's TANKING and you can pick one up for super cheap with around 15,000 miles on it.

Not sure I would want to buy a USED Evo as I am sure it was probably driven like it was stolen and they wanted to get rid of the evidense.
