Did anyone else notice the photo of the early 911 shown is backwards. The tailpipe, gas door and antena are all on the right side of the car. I notice this every so often in the mag but this time bothered me, maybe becuase I am a early 911 kind of guy.

Maybe the car's from England... :p

Probably flipped the negative of the pic

"Flipping" a picture for composition purposes happens more often than most of us probably realize. But, to flip a picture of a Porsche in a magazine whose readers are Porsche-addicts doesn't make much sense. I'd bet the art director of Excellence doesn't own a Porsche so, he probably never gave it a second thought.

At first I thought it was flipped...but note, wipers parked in the original position for a really early SWB 911. My guess? An early factory test mule...one of the first, if not the first 911?

araine901 07-05-2004 08:14 AM

So the wipers are right and the tail pipe, gas door and antena are all on the wrong side?

Leader 07-05-2004 08:23 AM

And actually, although it's kinda hard to tell, the Porsche crests on the wheels look right, which would mean the photo is not "flipped."

How about the mirror on the drivers position on the door indicating it is either RHD or a backwards negitive.

Not definitive proof one way or another, but here's a quote from the S Registry BB...evidently, the car in the EXCELLENCE pic is a rare bird indeed, made in 1964!:

Car Number 300 049

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The car number you are asking about is # 300 049. The 82 cars made prior to it were 901's. His car was the first to have the type number 911. The cars made in year 1964 were not made in any sequential order that's why the 83rd car made had the serial number 049.

Of the 232 cars made in 1964 less than 40 have been identified in the world. Alois Ruf has just completed car number 300 037 and has a large pictoral in the January issue of the english publication, "GT Purely Porsche". The last issue of Excellence has the listing of top 10 Porsches for style and is led off with a photo of Bill Cummings 300 134 .

By the way, the asking price for Jerry's car was $400,000 (Hemming and Panorama ads) prior to the restoration. You might want to factor that into the restore cost.

Hope this helps.

My old roommate worked at a color separation company in Austin that did work for Texas Monthy (a big snobby magazine for those of you non-Texans). He was glancing over some pics that were going in the magazine and commented to someone that he didn't know Eric Johnson (guitar player) played left handed. He doesn't. It almost made it to print.
