bmw, really has my bud by the nuts.

he cant do a damn thing to his new 330. he had to take it to the dealer to have an alarm installed. to the tune of $610. i know they just plugged it into some factory harness. probably took 10 minutes. i was, "let me do it!". but he said any and ALL outside work will void his warranty. he cant even hardwire up a V1 radar detector. does this make sense? i know, i just helped install a powerstroke BANKS upgrade kit to a brand new F350, and we checked, he is still warrantied. what gives? new pcars, the same?

I think BMW has enough electrical problems on their own....well at least for the 7 series.

I can't say I blame them. Many electrical problems, including fires, are the result of poor aftermarket installations.

First link is self explanatory -

Another point is that an entire warranty cannot be voided based on an addition of an aftermarket part. ie. they cannot refuse service if you install an aftermarket alarm on the vehicle and then you lose oil pressure or your tires bubble.

They can void it however, if the failure is proven to be directly related to a non - factory approved addition or improper servicing.

Your friend can in fact install an aftermarket alarm as long as it's demonstrated that it was done correctly and no failures can be proven to be a result of the work. To void the warranty on such grounds they (BMW) would have to provide one N/C as an option - like the 1st link states.
