Unfortunately, any person running for political office can be construed as pursuing power, and a similar list could be assembled for or against any candidate as shown in some of the other threads, depending on the assembler's point of view.

I must admit, though, that the conservative end of the spectrum has been far more successful at making "liberal" a dirty word than the liberals have been able to do with the concept of "conservative".

In one post I did a while back, I bemoaned the lack of good definitions of the two terms. I humbly offer the following, after considerable thought, as a beginning. The following are my definitions of the extremes of the spectrum only:

Neo Conservative: Do not change anything; leave it alone, it is just the way we want it; orderly and easy to follow. Change is bad. Bring back the good old days.

Ultra Liberal: The whole system is bad. Everything needs to be changed. Conformity is wrong and every individual's point of view is equally valid and must be taken into account.

So one is totally for "order" and the other eschews "chaos". In the true sense of the words, one is static and the other is dynamic, neither word to be used as a moral judgement, just as descriptions of movement or lack thereof.

I hope the numbers at both ends are small and the majority have a little of both traits. Some things need to be re-examined and possibly changed; others are OK as they are and need to be left as is.

A little exercise: Take a look at your own individual favorite presidents and rate them as to their liberal or conservative tendencies, using the "change" vs. "no change" concept. You might just be surprised at what you come up with. Remember, if the individual "did little or nothing" that would tend toward conservative in philosophy. Reagan? Roosevelt? Kennedy? Hoover? Truman? Nixon? Carter? Bush I? Clinton?

The posted link is obviously a fair and unbiased examination of the man, John Edwards.

There is no question that a shrub born with a silver spoon both in his mouth and later under his nose is more worthy of our respect for his personal accomplishments as a young businessman than a working-class kid from a mill town who worked hard and graduated from college and law school.

I guess this is the re-invention of the American Dream. Spin, spin, spin.

re the HERO bill, if our troops weren't mired in this god forsaken war it wouldn't be an issue. as for the "no" on many bills, one would have to examine the whole individual bill being voted on, as in what little piece of the hog edwards might find objectionable. mci for the vp, NOW!!!

Oh, and one more thing:
in a representative democracy, the elected official is beholden to his conscience only. You can fault Edwards for his votes, but not for betraying his voters. If they are displeased with him, the won't elect him again. Insinuating that he disguised his true intention is silly.
