Related news -- Japanese schoolgirls in Osaka to be tagged with RFID. http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/14/0049259&mode=thread&tid=126&tid=158&tid=99

Seems like a few years ago they had planned on doing the chip implant routine for the US Marines -- like dog tags, except digital. They'd be planted either in the right wrist or the forehead. A number of Christian groups popped up and noted loudly that the mark of the beast was supposed to be placed on the right wrist or the forehead, and the whole thing kind of disappeared.

It puzzles me that the news stories seem to show an *identified* person being implanted. If you wanted to kidnap that person, you'd know exactly where to cut to get rid of the implant...

I guess like LoJack, you'd have to choose various locations.

For instance, didn't Tim McVeigh claim they put one in his butt?

After a couple years in prison, I'm sure they put more than one in his butt...

If I remember correctly, these were promoted as being used to carry medical information. However, I'm not interested in an RFID chip typed device used in a self-check out grocery store for example. What happens next in "the name of security"?

Porsche ownership and body implantation as harmonious?

I have read somewehere that the day would come where everybody would have to be implanted, in order to be identified as lawful citizen.
Without implant, you could not board on a plane, you could not get a credit card, etc, etc...And all of that would have been created by the fabricated threat of terrorism. But of course, that would be in reality the mark of the beast: get tagged like cattle and lose all your freedom, or become a second class citizen with pretty much no future. Truly scary.
The scarriest part is that slowly but surely, it looks like we are headed there...

It may not be in the name of security, actually -- more likely in the name of convenience. "Leave the wallet at home, carry your ID/CreditCards/etc. in this magical little implant!" You'd walk through the checkout line and it would read the CC from your implant, check your ID from the implant, and log your purchases for entry into Safeway/Piggly/QFC's big database in the sky. You'd get e-mails tailored to your desires, letting you know that your favorite brand of cold cereal is on sale this week. Convenient? Sure.

Of course, eventually most people will get them, because it really seems like it makes sense. Of course, if you don't get one, you'll be unable to make purchases anywhere, which is pretty much crippling. There's definitely the Big Brotherish possibilities, of course -- tracking locations of various people, random activities, that sort of thing. There's no reason to obtain a court order before monitoring someone's Tag, either -- it's mostly public data anyway, right?

Ah, yes, good stuff.

There was a story of Wall-Mart switching from UPCs to RF transmitters for the purpose of efficiency. That would be good for whole palate crates in a warehouse but it was slated for individual projects for individual products.

Already there is blanket scanning of all internet naviagtion, t.v., email, and telephone conversations fed through logic computers, auto/cellular GPS with 2-way communication, banking transactions scrutinized to a "t", etc... It's a paranoid/pschizos wet dream.

All of this east german communism sh&t would be alright beacuse 'mericans will sacrifice their rights in times of true war if there seemed to be a greater human purpose, but the politicians on both sides still seem to be motivated by fight/flight and food/power/sex. Human tragedy will continue as usual, just monitored better.

Somehow that "FREEDOM" thing gets kinda muddled in that bureacratic mess.

One can sell edible sh&t at high prices to the masses, the only challenge is how to market it.
